Fresh, innovative and wickedly entertaining, The Cabin in the Woods is one of the most awesome experiences I've ever had at the theatres. Once again certifying Joss Whedon's astounding genius, it raises the bar for the whole horror genre, delivering laughs, thrills and a plot so cleverly designed that it makes everything else in the category look like second-rate garbage.During the first half hour or so, it doesn't seem like anything special: five 20-something friends go on a trip to a remote forest cabin, meet some creepy truck stop guy who speaks of death and impending darkness, or something of the like. Pretty much your average scare fare from the Hollywood assembly line.Or so it seems. Because as the curious youths begin exploring the enigmatic cabin - thus awakening its terrors - we suddenly find ourselves in a deep and ominous situation, where nothing is as it appears and your predictions are thrown completely out the door. I'm gonna stop right there not to give anything away, but let's just say that all hell breaks loose, in a pulse-pounding cavalcade of blood-splattering events, that sets its phaser to "balls-to-the-wall" and keeps it there until the very end.Not since the first season of Lost have I been so absorbed into a fictional place and its arcane oddities. It's like reading a really great mystery novel, that just gets better and better for every page turned and revelations unearthed. I really can't remember the last time I saw a horror-thriller this original and intense - if ever!Everyone in the cast does a pitch-perfect job. Most notably Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Bradley Whitford and Fran Kranz. The latter of which reminded me a bit of a pot-smoking Shaggy from Scooby Doo. Tremendous kudos also goes to director Drew Goddard, who co-wrote the screenplay with writer-producer Joss Whedon.It's not only brilliant and groundbreaking, but also has a lot of fun with the material. Sometimes a little too much fun as the humor isn't always befitting, but that's about the only flaw this film ever presents. Otherwise it would have been a 5-star achievement.An elaborately written, out-of-the-box fright-fest, that puts a whole new spin to the genre, which for a long time looked to be at a loss for ideas. They sure weren't kidding when they called it the Inception of horror movies.Imagine all your worst nightmares, collected within the frames of a single film. Then add intelligence, adrenaline and an ingeniously unique story concept, and you can't help but love this masterfully crafted entertainment piece. All I can say is: expect the unexpected!

Lawmakers reach compromise on roads, student loans

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Facing weekend deadlines for action, congressional leaders have agreed to deals overhauling the nation's transportation programs without a Republican provision forcing approval of the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline, and avoiding a doubling of interest rates for new student loans, congressional officials said Wednesday.

The agreements underscored the pressures both parties face to avoid angry voters and embarrassing headlines in the run-up to this November's presidential and congressional elections. Letting road-building programs grind to a halt during an economic downturn would be a blow to the image of lawmakers, while Democrats and Republicans alike seemed eager to avoid enraging millions of students and their parents by boosting the costs of college loans.

In contrast, enactment of the transportation measure would create or save 3 million jobs, said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., chief sponsor of the Senate version of the bill. And the student loan measure would spare an estimated 7.4 million students who get subsidized Stafford loans beginning July 1 ? this Sunday ? from facing $1,000 in higher interest costs over the lives of their loans, which typically take over a decade to repay.

Congressional leaders were planning to combine the highway and student loan measures into a single bill to reduce potential procedural obstacles and hoped for final approval this week. Lawmakers would then leave Washington for a July 4 recess.

The two-year highway bill would prevent the government's authority to spend money on highways, bridges and transit systems from lapsing on Saturday, along with its ability to collect gasoline and diesel taxes. With both parties checkmating each other's top priorities this campaign season, Democrats and Republicans say the highway measure will be Congress' top job-creation initiative until the November elections.

"This is the jobs bill for the 112th Congress," said House Transportation Committee Chairman John Mica, R-Fla.

As the price for the highway agreement, lawmakers said Republicans dropped a House-approved provision requiring the government to approve the proposed Keystone pipeline, which is to move oil from western Canada to Texas' Gulf Coast.

Pipeline approval ? which prompted a veto threat from President Barack Obama ? has been a top goal this election year for the GOP, which has pitted its claims that it would create jobs against environmental worries that it could accelerate global warming and endanger Midwestern water supplies.

Republicans also agreed to abandon language blocking the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating the toxic ash generated by coal-fired power plants, lawmakers said. The ash is used as an ingredient in some types of cement.

In return, House Republicans won Senate concessions that would halve the time allowed for environmental reviews for highway projects, and squeeze money for bike paths and pedestrian safety projects by forcing them to compete with other transportation projects, said congressional aides and environmental lobbyists.

The bill would give states more flexibility in spending federal money, impose new safety regulations and expand a federal loan guarantee program to encourage private investments in transportation projects.

Despite the measure's short-term impact, the bill delays for two years decisions about a long-term funding scheme for highway and transit programs. Gas and diesel taxes no longer cover the cost of transportation programs and are forecast to bring in less revenue as the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks increases.

President Barack Obama spent weeks this spring touring college campuses and lambasting Republicans for not pushing a freeze on student loan rates through Congress. GOP presidential challenger Mitt Romney, looking to avoid handing Obama an issue, quickly said he favored the interest rate extension and congressional GOP leaders did too, though some Republicans think the government should not spend money to keep loan rates low.

The student loan pact would keep today's 3.4 percent interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans from doubling for new loans approved beginning on Sunday, an automatic increase that Congress enacted five years ago to save money. If they did double, it would affect 7.4 million students expected to get the loans over the 12 months beginning July 1, adding $1,000 to the interest costs of the typical borrower over each loan's life.

The tentative agreement was on the same package Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., had said Tuesday that they had shaken hands on, said a congressional Republican who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the measure's status. McConnell said he expected the House to accept the agreement.

"We're moving, I think, towards an agreement on a transportation bill that would also include a one-year fix on the student loan rate increase," Boehner told reporters early Wednesday after meeting privately with House Republicans.

Some GOP lawmakers at that meeting said Boehner seemed to favor the emerging deal and said it received a positive reception.

"The general sense is there's a tremendous amount of support for getting it done," said Rep. Tom Reed, R-N.Y. "That's what's going to drive it across the finish line."

The two parties spent the last several weeks dueling over how to pay for the $6 billion cost of the student loan bill.

Under the agreement, the government would raise $5 billion by changing how companies calculate the money they have to set aside for pensions. That change would make their contributions more consistent from year to year and in effect reduce their payments initially, lowering the tax deductions they receive for their pension contributions.

Another $500 million would come from increasing the fees companies pay for the government to insure their pension plans, linking those fees to inflation.

In addition, $1.2 billion would be saved by limiting federal subsidies of Stafford loans to six years for undergraduates.

Lawmakers decided to wrap in another Senate bill to reauthorize the national flood insurance program for five years.

The program, which provides federally backed insurance for 5.6 million households and businesses, many in flood-prone areas, has gone deeply into the red from claims after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The Senate legislation would try to return the program to fiscal soundness through such steps as allowing premium increases and reducing subsidies for vacation homes.

Syria: TV station attacked, 7 staffers killed

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Gunmen raided the headquarters of a pro-government Syrian TV station early Wednesday, killing seven employees, kidnapping others and demolishing buildings, officials said. The government blamed terrorists and described the killings as a "massacre."

An Associated Press photographer who visited the Al-Ikhbariya station's compound said five portable buildings used for offices and studios had collapsed, with blood on the floor and wooden partitions still on fire. Some walls had bullet holes.

Al-Ikhbariya is privately-owned but strongly supports President Bashar Assad's regime. Pro-government journalists have been attacked on several previous occasions during the country's 15-month uprising, although such incidents are comparatively rare.

Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi said the killings were "a massacre against the freedom of the press" in remarks broadcast on state TV. He later told reporters that it had been carried out by terrorists ? the same word the government uses for rebels.

Rebels deny they target the media.

Much of the violence that has gripped Syria over the past 15 months has been sanctioned by the government to crush dissent. But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.

Many in the opposition consider the media an arm of the regime. Syria does not have a free press and most news organizations are either state-run or private bodies that carry the government's point of view. Most of the private TV stations and newspapers are owned by politicians or wealthy businessmen who have close links to the regime.

Assad denies that there is any popular will behind the uprising, saying terrorists are behind a conspiracy to destroy the country.

Al-Zoebi, the information minister, said gunmen stormed the station's compound in the town of Drousha, about 20 kilometers (14 miles) south of the capital Damascus, and detonated explosives. He said the attackers killed seven people and kidnapped others.

Restrictions on the media make it difficult to verify accounts of events on the ground.

An employee at the station said several other staffers were wounded in the attack, which happened just before 4 a.m. local time. He said the gunmen kidnapped him along with several station guards. He was released but the guards were not.

The employee, who did not give his name for fear of repercussions, said the gunmen drove him about 200 meters (yards) away, and then he heard the explosion of the station being demolished.

"I was terrified when they blindfolded me and took me away," the man said by telephone.

Earlier this month, two Al-Ikhbariya employees were shot and seriously wounded by gunmen in the northwestern town of Haffa while covering clashes between government troops and insurgents.

Hours after the attack, the station was still on the air, broadcasting a rally in Damascus' main square against the station raid.

Also Wednesday, Burhan Ghalioun, the former leader of Syria's main opposition group, said he briefly entered rebel-held areas in the north of the country in a rare trip by the exiled political opposition to the country. Ghalioun told Al-Jazeera TV that the areas he visited in Idlib province are ruling themselves, without any regime presence.

Ghalioun, former head of the Syrian National Council, did not say when the visit happened.

"I went to see the war that the Syrian regime is staging," Ghalioun said. "The regime continues to shell and kill." Ghalioun said he spoke with wounded Syrians including some who lost limbs and others who were paralyzed.

He added that he was able to drive about freely and that "part of the country is liberated."

Activists reported violence throughout Syria on Wednesday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist network, said at least 10 government soldiers were killed in an ambush in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour.

The group said that rebels on Tuesday were able to shoot down a helicopter gunship in Idlib province. Amateur videos showed a helicopter burning in a field but the report could not be independently confirmed.

Activists reported other clashes, mostly in Idlib and nearby Aleppo province as well as rebel-held areas in the central city of Homs that have been under government attack for nearly three weeks.

In neighboring Turkey, some 30 more Syrian soldiers defected with their families overnight, the country's state-run Anadolu news agency reported Wednesday. It was not clear if the group included any senior officers.

Assad's regime has suffered an embarrassing string of high-ranking defections this week, with dozens of soldiers, including senior officers, reported to have fled to Turkey.

Victim Seriously Injured in Single-Vehicle Crash in Sage

SAGE, California (RIVERSIDE COUNTY)?The driver of a vehicle was seriously injured after they were ejected from their vehicle?after crashing into a fence Sunday afternoon.

According to a Riverside County Fire Department official, six fire fighters reported to the crash at 1:04 p.m. in the 31400 block of Coralee Lane in Sage. The motorist suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to an area hospital, said officials.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and investigators are trying to determine the cause of the accident, said a fire department spokesperson.

?Victims who are ejected from a vehicle in a collision typically suffer severe injuries or even worse, death,? said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. ?Taking small precautions such as wearing a seatbelt, placing children in child seats or booster seats and reducing speed can help prevent this from happening.?

Sports Utility Vehicles have the highest fatalities of unrestrained ejections and data shows that children are most likely to be ejected in car crashes, the NHTSA reports.

To help prevent ejections, the NHTSA recommends making sure all passengers in the vehicle have their seat belts on. In 2008, more than 13,000 lives were saved nationwide because passengers had buckled up.

Garmin is adding a new product to its line-up of fitness watches, and this one is dedicated to workouts of the aquatic variety. The $150 Garmin Swim tracks your distance swam, average pace, workout time and more, and it uploads those stats to the web to help monitor your progress. Though it's meant to be a part of your exercise routine, the Garmin Swim watch looks like your average plastic digi-timepiece. The watch has six buttons with functions for viewing the time of day, scrolling through the menu options, controlling the timer, viewing the menu and entering workout mode. The setup takes some getting used to, but the illustrative icons on the watch helped us get into the rhythm quickly.

Getting started with the Swim simply entails entering the size of your pool, with options to measure in yards or meters. Once that info is uploaded, you press the swim button and are ready to get splashing. We spent a solid half-hour doing laps, and the Swim duly recognized and recorded that we varied our strokes. Stopping the timer each time we took a break created a new interval for our workout, with a rundown of the elapsed time, distance in meters, number of strokes, type of stroke, total laps, average speed and calories burned. That's a lot of data to pore over, and Garmin lets you wirelessly upload it all to the Garmin Connect site. To do this, you have to pair the watch with your computer using a USB ANT stick: once it works, it's an efficient, easy way to review your workout, but it took us a few tries before our laptop recognized the watch. Celeb Real Estate: Diane Keaton settles down

This week in celebrity real estate, serial flipper Diane Keaton bought a move-in ready home, Merv Griffin's estate took a price cut and Patty Duke's former home hit the market.

Now this is a surprising role for Diane Keaton. The Hollywood house restorer extraordinaire appears to have bought a house that?doesn't need a thing!

After years of restoring luxurious Hollywood homes and earning a spot as an Architectural Digest mainstay for the way her renovated homes have been re-sold to other celebs, Keaton is trying something new: Buying a house that's move-in ready.

Of course, the home could just be a "placeholder" for Keaton and her two teenage kids. In the latest issue of AARP magazine, Keaton says she is looking for a new challenge.

According to the LA Times, the 7,800-square-foot, 6-bed, 9-bath home has three levels of living space, including an entertainer's space on the lower level that has a large temperature-controlled wine cellar, movie theater and private gym. Sitting on a nearly a quarter-acre, the home embraces an indoor-outdoor lifestyle with a wraparound grassy yard, pool and spa, as well as patio with grill and outdoor kitchen.

Other Keaton properties include:

• A Spanish-Colonial revival in Beverly Hills (purchased by Glee creator Ryan Murphy)
• Lloyd Wright?s Los Feliz landmark Samuel-Novarro House (she sold to Christina Ricci)

Merv Griffin's 39-acre luxury ranch takes a price cut

By the time Merv Griffin passed away in 2007 at the age of 82 from prostate cancer, the entertainer and talk-show host had amassed a fortune estimated at around $1 billion. A lot of that came from his real estate investments, including famous hotels and casinos.

Now, the 39-acre, Palm Springs-area estate that Griffin used as his desert base is available at a significant price cut. The Moroccan-themed property, which is also a horse farm where Griffin bred Arabians, at 81345 Avenue 54 in La Quinta, Calif., has been re-listed for $9.5 million.

The property was one of Griffin's most creative enterprises, as he described it in an interview two years before his death. The property includes 14 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms spread among 20,000 square feet of living space. There is a lavish, 5,000-square-foot main house and four, one-bedroom poolside casitas. The property remains a testament to the old-style Hollywood way of livin' large.

Warm feelings about Patty Duke's former home has not resulted in a sale -- yet

Look hard enough and you'll find a lot of Los Angeles homes for sale?come with their own well-chronicled histories, thanks to generations of entertainment-world inhabitants.

On that note, the Beverly Hills home once owned by Patty Duke is on the market. She owned the property from 1966 until 1970 at 1600 Summitridge Drive?in the Beverly Glen neighborhood of the world-famous 90210 ZIP code.

The 5-bedroom, 6-bathroom house with 360-degree views of Los Angeles has been on the market for the better part of 15 months. Its current list price of $5.395 million is down from the original $6.5 million in March 2011.

The home was built in 1942 and has been maintained in pristine, move-in condition. It has found a new selling point as real estate experts in the real estate market have started to connect its history to Duke, as well as Sharon Tate and Polanski. The later pair were unable to buy the Duke home and instead moved across the street to the infamous house on Cielo Drive (now torn down and replaced) where Tate was murdered by Charles Manson.

Long before Miley Cyrus or Selena Gomez or Hillary Duff or even Marlo Thomas, Duke was the talented young star whose television series helped interpret and reflect modern American life and culture circa 1960.

But when Duke was trying to leave behind "The Patty Duke Show" and the persona(s) she created -- she played herself and her cousin, a la Haley Mills in "The Parent Trap'' -- she went looking for new roles. That's how she would end up fighting for a part in the perfectly dreadful, but box-office success "Valley of the Dolls."

Wolverton: New Apple laptop's display shines, but for a high price

I know I'm supposed to be blown away by Apple's (AAPL) new MacBook Pro with Retina display -- but I'm not.

It's a very nice computer. And the screen, which according to Apple has such a high resolution that the typical user can't see its individual pixels, is beautiful.

But compared with the typical laptop, the MacBook Pro with Retina display -- couldn't Apple have come up with a catchier name? -- is very expensive. And the MacBook Pro's display turns out to have limited benefits, particularly for those who are not creative professionals.

The new Retina display MacBook Pro is Apple's attempt to remake its professional line of notebooks in the image of its popular MacBook Air computers. As it did with the Air, Apple built the new Pro around flash storage. So, like the Air, the Retina Pro lacks both a hard drive and a DVD drive.

The result is a computer that is more than a pound lighter than the comparable hard-drive MacBook Pro and is more than half a centimeter thinner.

The flash drive makes the Retina Pro a superfast machine. From a cold boot, I was able to get to its login screen within 15 seconds. And I could shut it down in about 5 seconds. Depending on how many programs or Web pages I had open when I shut the computer down, I could have everything automatically reopened in

as little as 30 seconds and no more than a minute.

Despite its thin size, the Retina Pro has similar battery life to the hard-drive based MacBook Pros and comes with the same updated quad-core Intel (INTC) mobile processors. And it offers the same Nvidia graphics chips as those computers with, in some cases, more graphics memory.

But the Retina Pro's screen is clearly its standout feature. The device's display has four times the resolution of the base models of the regular MacBook Pros. It's bright, vivid and super-sharp, although the difference between it and the older screens can be hard to tell unless you have them side-by-side.

Apple pioneered its Retina display concept with the iPhone 4 and brought the technology to the iPad earlier this year. On-screen images and applications on both look much sharper than on previous models, and the screens on those older models look pixilated by comparison.

On a Mac, a high-resolution display potentially offers more significant benefits. Users wanting to edit video can display a high-definition video at full 1080p resolution and still have plenty of room left over for editing controls and thumbnails of other images. Likewise, users editing pictures can zoom in on fine grained details while still being able to see a significant portion of the overall image.

Even if you're not into photo or video editing, you could still benefit from a high-resolution display. The new display allows users to greatly enlarge the text in e-books or Web pages without the words becoming fuzzy.

At least it can in some cases. One of the Retina Pro's shortcomings is that while Apple has updated its own applications for the display, very few programs or websites from other companies are designed to be used or viewed on it. The result is that text, images or applications can look worse than they would on a lower-quality screen because the computer has to stretch low-resolution fonts and pictures over a greater number of pixels.

If you download a PDF document and view it in Apple's Preview program, which has been updated for the new display, it looks beautiful. You can zoom in to the point that regular text is jumbo-sized and it still will look sharp and clear.

Not so if you view the same document in Google's (GOOG) Chrome browser via its built-in PDF reader. In that case, the more you zoom in, the fuzzier the text tends to look. And it's not just PDFs. If you're using Chrome, the text of typical websites can look fuzzy. Text looks better in Apple's own Safari browser, but Web page graphics often look blurry.

The problem isn't limited to Web browsers. The Kindle app for the Mac also isn't optimized for the new screen and the text looks out of focus when enlarged. Tweets in the Twitter app look fuzzy even at regular size.

Many of these problems will be solved over time as developers update their apps, graphics and Web pages to better support the new display. But there are other reasons to pass on the Retina Pro, and one is price.

The base model costs $2,200. That's a staggering sum, given that you can buy a Windows laptop with the same chip and graphics processor -- but no Retina display or flash drive -- for less than a $1,000.

And $2,200 gets you no bells and whistles. Add more memory, a faster processor and a larger flash drive to the Retina Pro and you can easily boost the price to more than $3,000.

Then there's the battery. Apple has sealed it up tight inside the Retina Pro. There's no easy way to swap it out for another one if it runs out of juice or is at the end of its life.

Unless you are a creative professional who's looking to replace a desktop or a similarly high-end laptop, you likely don't need the Retina Pro. If all you need is computer for regular office tasks, but you want one that's thin, light and quick to boot, you can get a MacBook Air -- or a similar Windows-based ultrabook -- for as little as $1,000.

It won't come with a Retina display, but you may not notice the difference.
