About Concrete Polishing

The methods of installing concrete floors have increased greatly over the last few years, to the point where concrete flooring is no longer just used for basements or garages, but all over the house. With new and improved techniques for staining, dying, and polishing floors, there is no reason to get a cheap basement, but have to spend a fortune on your kitchen and dining room.

The degree of polish on a concrete floor is up to the home or the business owner. The surfaces can be polished to a gentle matte finish or to a high mirror shine in which the concrete mimics stone varieties like marble, granite or travertine. Polished concrete floors are easy to clean and maintain and also don't harbor dirt, grime or allergens.

A home or business owner can actually polish his or her own concrete floors; individuals can rent equipment, most likely from the company that installed her floor in the first place. The process is time-consuming and messy and most people agree that concrete floor polishing is best left to the professionals.

Aside from the fact that building codes may make the entire process more complicated, the dry method of polishing throws up lots of dust and the wet method produces slurry. Concrete floor polishing starts with the removal of the original coating of the floor, after which the floor is polished numerous times with grinders using diamond grit, which becomes finer and finer each time the floor is polished. After the floor has been polished, it is coated with a hardener and then polished again with more diamond grit. Then, the concrete is then sealed to make it stain resistant.

When the concrete is polished using the wet method, the dust that is inevitably kicked up is removed by water. The water also cools down the diamond grit, which lengthens the lifespan of the grinder; however, the method also creates mud that the contractor will need to clean up afterwards. When using the dry method, the dust is collected by a machine. Often, the dry method is utilized during the first phases of concrete polishing and the wet method is used during the finishing.

Maintaining polished concrete floors only requires that the homeowner dry mop it consistently to get rid of any grime. Though the floor is hard and tough, grime can scratch it. The floor should also be wet mopped once or twice a week using a mop with a soft head or pad. The cleanser should be pH neutral and mixed into clean, somewhat tepid water and never allowed to dry and harden on the floor. The homeowner should also blot up all spills as soon as possible, even if the floor is sealed.

Conn. tribal gambling company expands into NJ - GamingLawyer

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. ? The tribe that owns the Mohegan Sun casino extended its reach in the East on Tuesday by taking over operations of Atlantic City's oldest casino, planting itself in the region's gambling mecca as an alternative to luring tourists to its slot machines and poker tables in eastern Connecticut.

If regulators approve the plan, it would expand the reach of one of the nation's main tribal casinos. At the same time, the Mogehan Tribal Gaming Authority is trying to get a piece of the fledgling casino industry in Massachusetts.

By taking over management of Resorts Casino Hotel, Mohegan becomes the first American Indian-run firm to expand into the established gambling destinations of Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

"It's a total reversal in the way the capital and management is going," said David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Before, it was Indian casinos trying to attract investment and management from Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

It also means Mohegan, which has its flagship casino in Connecticut and Pennsylvania's Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, would have properties a few hours' drive from New York City in three different directions ? establishing it as an even bigger name-brand in the Northeast.

"The timing is right," MTGA CEO Mitchell Etess said Tuesday in Atlantic City. "We have long looked at the Atlantic City market as an excellent opportunity."

He said a bold citywide marketing campaign that invites people to "Do A.C." and the May opening of the new Revel casino show the city is heading in the right direction, even as gambling revenues shrink.

Under the deal, Mohegan would invest an undisclosed sum in Resorts, where the Art Deco building in 1978 became the first place to gamble legally in the U.S. outside of Las Vegas.

The company would also manage the casino, which has had a tumultuous run even by the tumultuous standards of Atlantic City over the past six years.

Etess said the company, which is also seeking a casino license in Massachusetts, would have shared marketing programs for its three casinos, though Resorts would not get a name change.

In a gambling world where customer loyalty is rewarded, Etess said a Mohegan connection would mean that the people who visit its other properties would likely stay and play at Resorts when they visit Atlantic City.

The Jersey shore town flourished as a gambling resort for nearly 30 years, with revenues growing every year.

But in 2006, casino gambling came to nearby Pennsylvania. Coupled with a brewing recession, that spelled trouble for Atlantic City, which has seen gambling revenue dropping for six years.

Resorts was sold in 2010 to Dennis Gomes and Morris Bailey for $31.5 million.

Gomes, seen as a visionary in the industry, rebranded the casino in a roaring `20's theme to capitalize on the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire" about Atlantic City in the Prohibition era.

But Gomes died in February and his son, Aaron, has been helping to run the casino. Etess said at a news conference with Aaron Gomes sitting nearby that he hoped that Gomes and other current executives and lower-level employees would remain.

Bailey said Tuesday that he and Dennis Gomes began searching for a management partner soon after they bought Resorts.

Last month, Resorts announced another new venture, teaming with Jimmy Buffett to develop a Margaritaville-branded entertainment complex in part of the casino. The Mohegan Sun's Connecticut casino, which opened in 1996, already has a Buffett-themed restaurant.

James Kamel, a casino industry analyst, said he expects Atlantic City's 12 casinos to undergo consolidations. By being in the city, he said, Mohegan sets itself up to be a player when that happens.

And UNLV's Schwartz said the price is probably right for the company. Buying into an existing casino he said, is far more affordable than buying one whole.

Ansell Announces Intention to Purchase Comasec SAS Business ...

Released on August 7th, 2012

RICHMOND, Australia, Aug. 7, 2012/PRNewswire-Asia/ ?

Ansell Limited (ASX:ANN), a global leader in protective solutions, has today announced its intention to acquire Comasec SAS, subject to regulatory approval. Comasec, which is headquartered in Gennevilliers, just north of Paris, France is a global leader in industrial hand protection solutions and has the capacity to manufacture over 200 million pairs of gloves annually. It has manufacturing plants in Malaysia and Portugal and employs over 1,200 people. The acquisition of Comasec will help strengthen Ansell?s position in the rapidly growing but fragmented $7bn industrial hand protection market. It will also significantly enhance Ansell?s presence in a number of important verticals including mechanical, chemical, food and utilities.

Ansell?s CEO, Magnus Nicolin commented, ?Comasec?s business is a strong fit strategically for our Industrial and Specialty Markets Global Business Unit (GBU). Comasec?s products and solutions significantly enhance Ansell?s presence in the mechanical, chemical, food and utilities verticals globally. Leveraging the strengths of both organisations will also provide Ansell with significant economies of scale in the areas of sales, marketing, supply chain and manufacturing. We are looking forward to integrating Comasec?s products and the well-known brands Comasec, Marigold Industrial and Marigold into Ansell?s hand protection brand portfolio alongside our industrial brands, HyFlex(R), AlphaTec(R) and TouchNTuff(R). There are strong product portfolio synergies between both businesses that will be leveraged in emerging markets, in the US and to further strengthen our market position in EMEA. We believe that this acquisition is a positive development for the industrial hand protection market. A combined Ansell and Comasec will provide an increased choice of solutions and products for end users, drive innovation and provide significant opportunities for suppliers.?

Pascal Berend, Comasec?s owner and CEO, said, ?Since its founding by my father in 1948, Comasec/Marigold has developed very successfully as a family-owned group in PPE. With China?s entry into the WTO and the acquisitions in recent years of many independent PPE players by major multinationals, I am pleased that Comasec is joining forces with Ansell, the recognized world leader in protective gloves. This combination will generate many opportunities to accelerate growth and innovation while continuing to provide quality products and services to our customers.?

We expect the transaction to close in the coming months and over several years Ansell will integrate both businesses, giving customers of Ansell and Comasec access to a more diverse product portfolio and increased choice of products and solutions. Both companies will also benefit from synergies in the area of Research and Development and Comasec?s superior IT platform will enhance the speed of response to customer orders across Ansell?s Industrial GBU.

Through the integration programme Ansell will actively focus on bringing together the best of both organisations for the benefit of the combined customer base. This will include enhanced structures for ordering and billing as well as innovative new products and solutions that combine the expertise of both companies.

Marvin Hamlisch: 1944-2012

Oscar-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch, whose music enlivened films as diverse as The Sting, The Spy Who Loved Me, and Sophie's Choice, died Monday in Los Angeles after a brief illness. He was 68.

Hamlisch is one of only 11 people to have won the EGOT -- that is, an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony (he won a Pulitzer Prize as well). Hamlisch is best known as the composer of A Chorus Line, the wildly popular musical about the hopes and struggles of a group of actors auditioning for a Broadway musical which ran for 15 years on the Great White way and was adapted into a film in 1985.

Born in New York City, Hamlisch was a musical prodigy, and was seven when he was accepted to the Juilliard School of Music. After working as a rehearsal pianist on Broadway in his teens, he focused on songwriting and film scoring; his first big-screen credit was for the 1968 Burt Lanchaster drama The Swimmer. Hamlisch made a splash in 1973 -- he won Oscars for Best Original Dramatic Score and Best Original Song for The Way We Were and Best Original Song Score and/or Adaptation for The Sting, making him just the second person to win three Oscars in one night. Subsequently, Hamlisch composed scores for The Spy Who Loved Me, Ordinary People, Sophie's Choice, and Three Men and a Baby; his last high-profile work was for Steven Soderbergh's 2009 dramedy The Informant! He is survived by his wife Terre.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20

By Jim Fisher

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 ($349.99 direct) ?is a marked improvement over its predecessor, the ZS10. Its lens isn't the sharpest we've seen, but the long-zooming camera does do well at higher ISO settings and features a GPS so you can easily geotag your photos. The 14-megapixel camera doesn't manage to better our current Editors' Choice compact superzoom, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V , but it is less expensive, making it a solid option for superzoom seekers on a budget.

Design and Features
The ZS20 follow the blueprint of most compact superzoom cameras. It measures 2.3 by 4.1 by 1.1 inches, weighs only 7.2 ounces, and has a modest grip on its front. The rear is dominated by a large touch-screen LCD, and there are a good number of controls squeezed into the svelte body. The ZS20 does make one departure in design when compared with its current competition?most other cameras in this class, including the Canon PowerShot SX260 HS ?feature a pop-up flash that hides in the body when not in use. The ZS20's flash is placed right on the front of the camera, next to the grip, so you'll have to be careful not to block it with your finger when shooting.

The lens is a 20x zoom covering 24-480mm (35mm equivalent) range. It isn't the longest in this class, but it is one of the widest. Only the Samsung WB850F ?is wider?its 21x lens starts at 23mm. The 3-inch rear LCD is a touch-screen design with a sharp 460k-dot resolution. You can tap the screen to fire and focus the camera, zoom the lens, navigate through menus, or swipe it to scroll through images in playback mode. It's not as responsive as a smartphone screen, and doesn't support multi-touch gestures like pinch, but is definitely above average when compared with other touch-enabled point-and-shoots. The touch input on the Canon PowerShot Elph 320 HS ?is unresponsive in comparison.

There are a good number of physical controls, including a Mode Dial, a dedicated Movie button, and a button that allows you to quickly adjust EV Compensation. Other shooting settings are adjusted via the Q. Menu, an overlay display that gives you access to White Balance, ISO, Drive Mode, Video Quality, Metering Area, LCD Brightness, GPS, and Image Resolution settings. Other settings must be adjusted via a standard text menu, which must be navigated via the on-camera controls?touch input isn't supported here.

The ZS20's GPS works quite well. It takes about 45 seconds to acquire a signal for the first time. Once enabled, the GPS does try and find at a regular interval when the camera is powered down, so you'll want to turn the GPS off when not using the camera if battery life is a concern. There's also Map functionality with landmarks, so you can see where a photo was taken.

Performance and ConclusionsPanasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 : Benchmark Tests
It takes about 2.3 seconds for the ZS20 to start and take a shot, fires off a burst of 10 photos in just over a second, and records a respectable 0.3-second shutter lag. If you don't mind a slower burst rate, you can shoot at 5 frames per second, grabbing about 17 photos before the camera slows down to about 2 frames per second. The Canon SX260HS is slower in terms of shot-to-shot time, topping out at 2 frames per second, but is able to start and shoot in 1.8 seconds and has a slightly faster 0.2-second shutter lag.

I used Imatest to check the sharpness of photos captured by the ZS20. It is a bit lacking, notching only 1,662 lines per picture height, shy of the 1,800 lines required for a sharp photo. The Samsung WB850F has a much sharper lens?one of the best we've seen in a compact superzoom?it resolves 2,377 lines.

Imatest also checks noise, which can harm image quality and make an image appear grainy at higher ISOs. Noise is kept under 1.5 percent through ISO 800, and image detail holds up very well through that setting. At this setting images look a smidge better than those from our Editors' Choice, the Sony HX30V, although the HX30V has an edge at ISO 1600 and 3200.

Video is recorded in either AVCHD or MP4 format. If you opt for AVCHD you can choose from 1080p60, 1080i60, or 720p60 resolution. You're limited to 1080p30, 720p30, or 480p30 video when you choose MP4 format. Regardless of resolution, the camera does a great job recording footage?it's sharp and bright with autofocus. You can zoom in and out while rolling footage, and there's also a digital zoom that extends the lens beyond its 480mm extreme, without giving up too much in terms of quality. There's a proprietary USB port, which doubles as the charging port?no dedicated battery charger is included?and a mini HDMI port to connect to an HDTV. Standard SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards are supported.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 may not be the best compact superzoom that we've tested, but it's far from the worst. It leaves a bit to be desired in image sharpness, but it does run neck and neck with our Editors' Choice Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V in high ISO performance. Both cameras have a GPS and support 1080p60 video, but the HX30V, which is $70 more expensive, adds Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi isn't a must, you should also consider the Canon PowerShot SX260 HS. It's priced the same, its lens is sharper, and image quality is comparable through ISO 800, but it's limited to 1080p24 video capture.

Phelps gets started on the rest of his life

Phelps retires with twice as many golds as any other Olympian, and his total of 22 medals is easily the best mark. (AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Paul Chiasson, File)

(AP) ? On the first day of the rest of his life, Michael Phelps found old habits are hard to break.

He popped out of bed around 6 in the morning Sunday, as if it were another normal training session.

"I wish I could sleep a little longer," Phelps said. "I've been used to getting up early the last 20 years. We're going to work on getting on a little different schedule."

Phelps can start sleeping later now. Heck, he can do whatever he wants. At 27, he ended his swimming career in London as the most decorated Olympian ever with 18 golds ? twice as many as anyone else ? and 22 medals overall. The only thing left to do is sign the retirement papers, which will remove him from the list of athletes who must undergo regular doping tests.

"I have not officially retired yet," Phelps told The Associated Press, "but very soon I will be signing those papers and it will be official."

Phelps isn't sure what he'll do next. There will definitely be plenty of traveling. Only this time he'll see more than just the bottom of pools and the inside of hotel rooms. He wants to work on his golf game ? "the proper way, not just going out there taking a couple of hacks at a little white ball." He might even take a trip to the beach, which was something he never wanted to do when he was swimming competitively.

"If I go swimming any place, it will probably be in the ocean," Phelps said. "I will actually enjoy getting in the water at the beach. I've been on a couple of vacations before, but I never wanted to get around water because I spent so much time in the water. Hopefully, I can jump in now and actually enjoy it, just splashing around with my friends."

For the most part, though, his retirement plans are a work in progress.

He's been so focused on his swimming, on making a splash at his final Olympics, that he clearly hasn't taken much time to figure out what he wants to do next. He just knows he doesn't want to swim, not competitively anyway.

"I don't even know where to begin," Phelps said. "I'm just going to take it one step at a time, one day at a time. If I want to do something, I'm just going to do it."

He was asked about a do-over as host of "Saturday Night Live." Back in 2008, shortly after breaking Mark Spitz's Olympic record by winning eight gold medals, Phelps made a rather stilted appearance on the late-night comedy show.

"Hopefully, I wouldn't be as nervous as I was last time. I remember walking out on the stage for that very first scene and thinking, 'Wow, if I mess up, everybody's going to see it,'" he said. "If they call and ask, I will definitely say yes. I would love to do it again."

For now, he's mainly focused on getting some down time. He's been swimming competitively for about two decades, and he's been at the top of the sport for nearly a dozen years. There are so many things he passed up so he could focus on swimming, and though there are no regrets, there's a lot of catching up to do.

"The biggest thing I really want to do is travel and see a bunch of the world," he said.

This, from a guy who's obviously done plenty of traveling, from Sydney to Athens, from Beijing to London. But this will be different. He wants to experience what other tourists get to experience.

He got a sampling of it Sunday, hitting the town with his mom, two older sisters and a niece.

"It's fun to see parts of this city," Phelps said. "Coming over the bridge this morning, seeing Parliament and Big Ben. I had not seen that this whole trip. It's cool being able to go around and see more of it. Hopefully, in the next couple of days, I'll be able to enjoy it a little bit more. I'll have more time to go out and see London like you're supposed to."

He paused and quickly added a telling comment on the single-mindedness that carried him to such glory in the pool but deprived him of so many other things.

"I don't know how you're supposed to" see London, Phelps said. "I have a friend who lives over here. I'll ask him what to do, what to see."

Phelps had barely climbed out of the pool for the final time when speculation started about whether he would come back. He's at an age where he could easily swim in another Olympics, maybe two. His coach, Bob Bowman, said Phelps would likely have to drop some of his longer events but could still be one of the world's best in several races if he wanted to keep going.

Dara Torres, who won three silver medals at age 41 and just missed making her sixth Olympic team this year, tweeted that she's betting on a Phelps comeback.

"Anyone care to wager???" she wrote.

Phelps playfully tweeted back: "Yes I would love 2!!!"

"The competitive part of my career is over, but that doesn't mean I'm done with the sport," he said. "This sport has allowed me so many opportunities. I've had the privilege to do some of the coolest things in the world. I'm still going with my goal, to try to change the sport, to take it to a whole new level. It hasn't reached the peak that I want it to reach."

He plans to attend the world championships in Barcelona next year, and he's already promised his mom that he'll take her to the Rio Games in 2016. But before anyone gets the wrong idea, he quickly adds, "I'm not competing. I'm not competing. I'm not competing.

"I want to see what it's like being on the outside looking in," Phelps said. "It will be cool to see how people progress."

He's not at all worried about the U.S. program carrying on without him. Indeed, this was more of a team effort than the past two Olympics, which were dominated by Phelps' Herculean performances. He still won more medals than any other swimmer, but four golds and two silvers was a step down from Beijing. Even so, the Americans won 16 golds ? their highest total in a non-boycotted Olympics since 1972.

Seventeen-year-old Missy Franklin captured four golds, equaling the U.S. mark for a female swimmer set by Amy Van Dyken in 1996. Allison Schmitt won three golds, plus a silver and a bronze. Fifteen-year-old Katie Ledecky nearly broke the world record in the 800 freestyle. And Ryan Lochte, who was a bit of a disappointment despite winning five medals, plans to keep on swimming.

"We have a great team right now," Phelps said.

One thing he doesn't want to do: Regain those 25 pounds he put on in 2009, when his enthusiasm for the sport waned and he wasn't even sure if he wanted to come back for another Olympics.

"I'm a person that's very goal-oriented," he said. "I'm sure I can find things to get excited and motivated for."

In keeping with the theme of a retrospective farewell, Phelps went with some slightly older hip-hop on his iPod during his eight days at the pool, songs he had used to fire himself up for previous meets and past Olympics.

When he walked on the deck for the final time Saturday night to take part in the 4x100-meter medley relay, he was jammin' to Young Jeezy's 2007 hit, "Go Getta," and a 2011 collaboration between Afrojack and Steve Aoki, "No Beef."

"I had those two songs kind of going back and forth," Phelps said. "Most of the meet, we threw in a couple of Lil Wayne songs. I kind of went old school. We didn't do too many new songs on this trip. We just put together everything I listened to over the years."

Phelps is eager to get home to Baltimore to be with his dogs, Herman and Stella.

Stella is a newcomer to the family, but she seems to be getting adjusted.

"I've been hearing stories and seeing pictures that Stella is more relaxed than before," Phelps said. "I want to be able to go home and hopefully not see Stella ripping Herman's wrinkles anymore. She kept doing that, and he would get so upset. But they like each other now. I definitely miss those guys. I remember the day I left, they all looked so sad."

Not Phelps.

He looked downright giddy about getting on with the rest of his life.

The Shekel - Coins, Law and Commentary: Much ToDo About Nothing

BGR.com: iOS developer is threatening to sue Android devs for using the word ?ToDo?

A developer that creates apps for Apple?s (AAPL) iOS platform has threatened to sue an Android app maker for using the word ?ToDo.? Appigo has sent a letter to an Android developer regarding his Star Trek ToDo Agenda app. In the letter, Appigo notes that it owns the trademark for the word ?ToDo? and the developer?s use of the word is ?likely to cause customer confusion to our existing and potential customers.? The problem with all this, as David Ruddock of Android Police points out, is that Appigo?s trademark happens to be for the Spanish word ?Todo,? and not a fanciful respelling of the phrase ?to-do.? Ruddock explains that ?had Appigo claimed ToDo [was] a fanciful respelling of To-Do, it would almost certainly not have received principle registration for its trademark until it had established sufficient secondary meaning.?

Yep, looking at Appigo's trademark registration, they did indeed trademark the word TODO (in all caps) with a statement that "The English translation of "TODO" in the mark is "ALL" or "EVERYTHING"."

Ooops, you really gotta hate cease-and-desist letters based on flimsy or in this case untenable legal support.

Daniel C. Brown Jr replied to Asst Natl Dir Melony B. DeFord's discussion Obama Campaign's Axelrod defends Lawsuit on Ohio military voting law

Published August 05, 2012

FoxNews.com

Top Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod on Sunday defended Democrats? lawsuit challenging an Ohio law on early voting for U.S. service members and called Mitt Romney?s portrayal of the case ?shameful.?

The Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee filed the suit to block a new state law allowing men and women in uniform to vote up until the Monday right before an election, while the cutoff on early voting for the rest of the public is three days earlier.

??The way Gov. Romney stated [the situation] is completely false,? Axelrod said on ?Fox News Sunday.? ?It?s shameful that Gov. Romney would hide behind our service men and women.?

Axelrod?s comments were the most recent in a back-and-forth since the suit was filed last month in a federal court in the battleground state of Ohio.

?President Obama's lawsuit claiming it is unconstitutional for Ohio to allow servicemen and women extended early voting privileges during the state's early voting period is an outrage,? Romney said Saturday.

Pistorius makes it to semifinals of Olympic 400

LONDON (AP) ? It began with a smile at the starting line.

Moments later, Oscar Pistorius took off and the click-click-clicking of carbon on the track was all but drowned out by the 80,000 fans on hand to watch him make history Saturday. The first amputee to compete in track at the Olympics, Pistorius cruised past an opponent or two in the backstretch of his 400-meter heat, and by the end, the "Blade Runner" was coasting in for a stress-free success.

Typical. Except this time, it was anything but that.

"I've worked for six years ... to get my chance," said the South African, who finished second and advanced to Sunday night's semifinals. "I found myself smiling in the starting block. Which is very rare in the 400 meters."

Yes, this sun-splashed day at Olympic Stadium was a good one for Pistorius, a double-amputee who runs on carbon-fiber blades and whose fight to get to this point has often felt more like a marathon than a sprint. He walked out of the tunnel, looked into the stands, saw his friends and family there ? including his 89-year-old grandmother, who was carrying the South African flag.

"It's very difficult to separate the occasion from the race," Pistorius conceded.

But he figured it out. He finished in a season-best time of 45.44 seconds, crossing the line and looking up at the scoreboard, then covering his face with his hands when he saw the capital "Q'' ? for qualifier ? go up by his name.

"Couldn't have hoped for anything better," he said.

The 25-year-old runner was born without fibulas and his legs were amputated below the knee before he was a year old. His is one of those stories that is every bit as much about the journey ? one part dramatic, another part inspiring and yet another part controversial ? as the final result.

"I know Oscar was the protagonist in the race," said Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic, who actually won the heat by .4 but went virtually unnoticed. "But I love him. He's a good racer."

Erison Hurtault of Dominica, who trained with Pistorius in South Africa, agreed.

"One thing I can say about Oscar is he's an incredibly hard worker," Hurtault said. "I'm glad to see him out here. I'm glad he's getting a chance to finally compete and hopefully something emerges out of everyone else's mind."

Pistorius' race, of course, resonated beyond sports and beyond London.

The runner's father, Henke, and Gerry Versfeld, the surgeon who amputated Oscar's legs, watched the heat at a restaurant in Johannesburg with some friends. The father and the doctor hugged after the race and there were tears in Henke Pistorius' eyes.

"To now stand on the pinnacle of where you strived and you hoped and you dreamed to be must be an amazingly emotional feeling for him," he said. "I feel compassion and pride."

Pistorius is an accomplished runner, with four Paralympic gold medals, but he waged a long fight to run in the Olympics against able-bodied opponents.

After dozens of hearings in front of hundreds of men and women in suits charged with the task of deciding whether the blades gave Pistorius an unfair advantage ? then getting his country's Olympic committee to accept his qualifying times and enter him into the games ? Pistorius finally got his chance.

He shook hands with his opponents, crouched into the blocks, flashed that smile and then ? in so many ways, it was just another race, with Pistorius among the fastest men in it.

"You've got to understand that Oscar is an exceptional athlete," said Versfeld, the surgeon. "I mean, he is an amazingly talented person. I think the chances that there are going to be many other athletes with disabilities, amputations, I think the chances that they will be able to compete with able-bodied athletes is not high and I really think we are seeing a one-off type situation."

Bursting out of the crouch from Lane 6, Pistorius got going slowly, but built up steam in the backstretch. He made up the lag and was easily among the top three when the runners turned into the backstretch. He passed Russia's Maksim Dyldin and then, as all the top runners do in a 400 prelim, eased off the gas over the final few meters to save energy for the next one.

Though he knows his personal-best of 45.07 seconds isn't fast enough to truly contend for a medal, Pistorius wants to be more than simply a set piece at these Olympics. His goal was to be a factor, to earn a spot in the semifinals, and he did that ? something the defending champion in this event, LaShawn Merritt, did not.

"He's fought to get here. He's here. Great guy, friend of mine," said Merritt, who pulled up lame with an injured hamstring halfway through his race and won't get to face Pistorius on the track.

One man who might, Britain's Nigel Levine, is among those who sounded less than thrilled about all the hype over Pistorius, who will also compete for South Africa in the 4x400-meter relay next week.

"Ask him," Levine said when asked if Pistorius had an advantage. "I'll keep my opinion to myself on that one. It has nothing to do with me."

Advantage or no, getting to the semifinals was never a sure thing. Then again, there haven't been many sure things for the "Blade Runner" on this Olympic road. And so, he appreciates every moment.

"It sometimes difficult to think the athletes and the friends and family of those who are here really understand what it's about," Pistorius said. "To be out here and to know you sacrificed 'X' amount to achieve this is just really mind-blowing."

(AP) ? All anyone's talking about ahead of the men's 100 meters is the showdown between Olympic champion Usain Bolt and world champion Yohan Blake, a pair of Jamaicans who train together.

As the premier track and field event of the London Games gets started with opening heats Saturday, it seems everyone has an opinion about who's going to win ? and the answers tend to be Bolt or Blake.

There are other contenders. There's the third Jamaican in the field, Asafa Powell. There's U.S.-record holder Tyson Gay, surgically repaired hip and all. And there even is another past Olympic champion, Justin Gatlin of the U.S., who walked off the stage in Athens eight years ago with the 100 gold.

But in 2006, Gatlin tested positive for excessive testosterone, leading to a four-year ban that prevented him from defending his title in Beijing.

Now 30, his prime years perhaps in the past, Gatlin has picked up his career. And guess what? He still believes he has a shot to reclaim his crown, even if he readily admits it's a long shot.

"There are other guys out there who have the upper hand on me since I've been gone for four years," said Gatlin, who won the 100 at the U.S. trials in June. "It's going to be an uphill fight for me to claw to the top."

Just as tough has been enduring all the negative talk, which goes something like this: Once a doper, always a doper.

He knows he can't change that perception. He's stopped trying.

"Look, I've turned the page, but it's a part of my book," he said. "I can never close the door on the past four years and say never I'll never look at it, because that's where a lot of my strengths have come from and a lot of my bravery."

During his ban from the sport, Gatlin found himself relying on unemployment checks to make ends meet.

"Going through the struggle I went through not only humbled me in my lifestyle but strengthened me as a person," he said. "I was able to turn into a man and understand what it is to not know where your income comes from. Because everything just pretty much imploded."

Steadily, he's picking up the pieces.

He's also regaining the form that made him an Olympic champion. He's shed weight, dropping about 20 pounds over the last year to get down to a little more than 180, and changed coaches, switching to Dennis Mitchell.

"I remember reading a blog site, where one blogger said I looked like a professional wrestler on the track," Gatlin said. "I was that big."

The challenge now for Gatlin ? and for everyone else in the race ? is finding a way to get past the 6-foot-5 Bolt, whose height helps him get to the finish line with fewer steps.

"He's going to cover more ground," the 6-1 Gatlin said. "So you're going to have to compensate somewhere else, being with strength or turnover. But Tyson beat him (in 2010), so that gives a lot of other runners, who are brave to go out there, confidence."

More recently, Blake beat Bolt, too. That happened at the Jamaican trials.

"I don't really want to say he's vulnerable," Gay said. "He's the only guy who's been where we haven't been. I think he still has to be one of the favorites. He's the champion and knows what it takes to compete on this level."

Sure does.

Bolt, after all, won the 100 and 200 at the Beijing Olympics, both in record time. He still owns both marks, including the 9.58 he ran in the 100 at the 2009 world championships.

Not everyone likes his chances in London, though.

Maurice Greene, the 2000 Olympic champion in the 100, thinks Blake is simply too strong right now.

"Technically, he's better," Greene said. "You win and lose through your technique, and Usain has been having technical problems for the last two years. He hasn't fixed it since then. ... I don't see him fixing it now. You have to go with (Blake)."

Gatlin also pictures himself in the mix for a medal.

"You always see these epic photos or short clips, where the whole stadium is dark and dim and then it goes really quiet," Gatlin said. "You see eight guys in the starting blocks, (the gun goes off), and the stadium lights up like a night's sky with photography. ... It's so special. I'm so glad I get to be a part of this now."

SEC closely reviewing Knight Capital trading glitch

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. securities regulators are looking into the events surrounding Knight Capital Group's trading glitch this week, which roiled markets and wiped out $440 million of the firm's capital.

"We continue to closely review the events surrounding yesterday's trading and discuss those events with other regulators as well as Knight Capital Group," Securities and Exchange Commission spokesman John Nester said.

"We also are considering what, if any, additional steps may be necessary, beyond the post-Flash Crash measures that limited the impact of yesterday's trading."

(AP) ? In the wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy five years ago, the University of Colorado and other schools across the U.S. created "threat assessment teams" to identify and take action against students who might turn violent. Now, in the aftermath of the movie theater rampage in Aurora, some are wondering whether the system broke down.

A Denver TV station reported this week that a university psychiatrist was so alarmed by graduate student James E. Holmes' behavior that she tried to bring him to the attention of the school's threat assessment team more than a month before the attack, but the group never met to talk about him because he had already taken steps to drop out.

Holmes, 24, is charged with murdering 12 people and wounding 58 in the July 20 rampage a few miles from the Aurora campus after methodically stockpiling guns and ammunition for months.

"If the argument is because he was no longer a student, he was no longer their problem, they are absolutely incorrect," said Larry Barton, a threat consultant and professor at American College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. "Any court and any victim's family would have an argument that the school acted with indifference. I hope they have a very compelling answer to why they did what they did."

University Chancellor Don Elliman has repeatedly said the school did all it could with regard to Holmes. He and other university officials have refused to discuss any specifics, citing privacy laws and a judge's gag order. The university would not say whether staff members had any concerns about Holmes or whether police were ever alerted to him.

However, KMGH-TV and the Denver Post, citing sources they did not identify, said police were never contacted.

It's not clear what alarmed the psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton, or whether she even treated him. But she helped found the school's Behavioral Evaluation and Threat Assessment Team in 2010.

The team's members are drawn from the counseling center, the faculty, the housing and student services departments and campus police. It consults with police, the university's legal team and mental health services.

It doesn't have the power itself to suspend or expel students or to force anyone to get mental health care. But it can refer students for voluntary care or school discipline and report threats to the authorities, the university said.

The idea of such teams is to bring all the warning signs together in one place.

"The end goal is to have coordinating systems, that different departments talk to each other," said Alison Kiss, executive director of the Clery Center for Security on Campus, which helps colleges and universities deal with security.

"People might act differently or say something during class, at a club or in a dormitory that might disclose different behaviors. It might not raise a concern when something's taken individually, but when you put them all together, they raise red flags."

Virginia passed a law in 2008 requiring its four-year public colleges to set up threat assessment teams to investigate students after a mentally unstable Seung-Hui Cho shot 32 people to death and committed suicide at Virginia Tech. The student had been sending out warning signs for years with his sullen behavior and twisted, violent writings.

Even if the Colorado team had convened and police investigated, it's unclear whether any violence could have been prevented.

In December, Morgan State University police and counselors in Baltimore evaluated student Alex Kinyua following an outburst in a computer lab and concluded he posed no threat. Months later he was charged with murdering a man and eating his heart and brain.

In Arizona, Pima Community College student Jared Loughner had several run-ins with faculty members, students and campus police before he was suspended in 2010. Campus police told him to get a mental health evaluation or not return.

Loughner was later arrested in the 2011 assassination attempt against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords that left six people dead. He was diagnosed a schizophrenic and ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Long Island man may have faked own drowning to claim life insurance

Raymond Roth (LinkedIn)An aggrieved New York woman has told police that her husband faked his own drowning to collect on a life insurance policy and to abandon his marriage.

"This is a terrible nightmare that I just want to wake up from,'' 43-year-old Evana Roth told the New York Post. "Why did he do this? I think I'm just numb.''

On Sunday, July 29, Raymond Roth, 47, told his wife that he was going for a swim at nearby Jones Beach and would be back in about an hour. However, his son claims that his dad disappeared while out on the water and never returned.

However, Evana Roth says she discovered emails allegedly sent from Raymond to her stepson Jonathan, 22, outlining details of his staged disappearance. After finding the details, Evana then contacted Raymond's brother and the police.

"I need to get to the bank for cash for the trip," Roth allegedly wrote in one email. In others, he instructs his son to not allow his wife to sell their house.

In another email obtained by the Post, Roth writes: "about the jewelry we spoke of yesterday, you need to whisper in [a relative's] ear about it and do not worry she will get it," and, "tell [another relative] i handed you the papers -- then you JUST noticed that there was an envelope with [his] name on it (the last Will and Testemnet [sic]) then hand it to him."

And Roth allegedly tipped off his location at a Florida resort, writing in another email, ?"there needs to be a way for me to find out how things are going. call me Sunday night at 8 PM at the resort. "You cannot call from your phone,'' the email continues, "go to a pay phone or borrow your friends phone. you must call within 15 minutes of the determined call time in order to be sure i will be available."

Police in Orlando went to the resort in question but reportedly did not find Roth there. However, another police report in Santee, S.C., says that he was stopped for speeding but let go after telling authorities he had recently been involved in an argument with his wife.

"He told the officer that he was having some problems in New York, so he went off to Florida," Santee Police Chief Bing Jones told Newsday.

Roth reportedly tripled the value of his life insurance in the months leading up to his disappearance.

Long Island police tells the Post that it has been in contact with Roth by phone and that he said he was coming in to talk with them. However, the police said it remains unclear whether or not criminal charges will be filed against him. However, the cost of the investigation is already estimated to be in the thousands.

"While I was crying and thinking he had drowned, he was vacationing in a resort and having a drink in the pool," Evana said.

(AP) ? Ted Cruz is fond of saying that when he began his run for U.S. Senate, he was at 2 percent in the polls against Texas Republican juggernaut David Dewhurst, the state's lieutenant governor for nearly a decade.

Actually, the 41-year-old former state solicitor general seemed an even longer shot than that.

Gov. Rick Perry and much of the rest of the Republican establishment lined up to endorse Dewhurst for their party's nomination to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, and the party's mainstream doesn't lose much in Texas. After all, the state hasn't elected a Democrat to statewide office in nearly 20 years.

But Cruz pulled off what had seemed an unthinkable upset Tuesday, and it wasn't even close. He trounced Dewhurst by about 13 percentage points, shaking one of America's reddest states to its political core.

His victory was all the more stunning considering Cruz lost to the lieutenant governor 44 percent to 34 percent during the state's May 29 primary. But simply making it to a second round of voting proved a major momentum-builder for Cruz, who vowed to prevail since his supporters were dedicated enough to turn out during the Texas summer doldrums.

Cruz got there by spending months sitting in on Republican women's meetings at Denny's, chatting up pastors at Bible studies and addressing tea party gatherings across Texas. Eventually, he became enough of a grass-roots sensation to attract the support of national conservative groups such as the anti-tax Club for Growth, which branded Dewhurst as too moderate and spent millions to help defeat him.

"We are witnessing a great awakening," Cruz told cheering supporters in Houston shortly after Dewhurst called him to concede Tuesday night. "Millions of Texans, millions of Americans are rising up to reclaim our country, to defend liberty and to restore the Constitution."

The race had been closely watched nationally as one of the most-vivid contrasts between the GOP mainstream and grass-roots, conservative activists. Shortly after most of the polls closed statewide, it had become a cakewalk for Cruz.

"We're just tired of the government ignoring the Constitution," said Don Steinway, a 76-year-old retired commercial airline pilot, who lives in Houston and described himself as a staunch supporter of the tea party.

Cruz's father Rafael was born in Cuba and fought with Fidel Castro's rebels before they embraced communism. The elder Cruz fled the island and arrived in Texas in 1957 with $100 sewn into his underwear. His son, meanwhile, is a onetime Ivy League debating champion with a fiery stage presence and a brand of populism that energizes grass-roots groups.

Dewhurst oversaw some of the most-conservative state legislative sessions in Texas history and helped speed the passage of laws requiring women to undergo a sonogram before having an abortion and voters to show identification at the polls. However, he also occasionally compromised with Democratic lawmakers to keep the legislative agenda moving.

Looking exhausted and shaken, Dewhurst told a small crowd in another part of Houston late Tuesday, "We got beat up a little bit but we never gave up."

Perry then released a statement calling Cruz "a force to be reckoned with: an excellent candidate and a great conservative communicator."

Also Tuesday, Democratic state Rep. Paul Sadler easily bested perennial candidate Grady Yarbrough to capture his party's nomination and face Cruz in November's general election, but Cruz begins that race the overwhelming favorite.

Sadler said that he stood "alone as the only nominee of a major political party in Texas because the Texas Republican Party has been hijacked by the tea party."

It doesn't look like a hijacking from where Cruz now sits. He successfully painted his opponent as wishy-washy ? even though they actually disagree on little.

Dewhurst also was endorsed by former baseball great Nolan Ryan, as well as former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, who finished third in the Republican primary, and ex-NFL running back and ESPN commentator Craig James, the primary's fourth-place primary finisher.

None of it was enough. Cruz was endorsed by ex-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, radio talk show host Glenn Beck, U.S. Sens. Jim DeMint of South Carolina and Kentucky's Rand Paul, as well as former GOP presidential hopeful and Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

"The message of this race couldn't be clearer for the political establishment: the Tea Party is alive and well and we will not settle for business as usual," Palin said via Facebook.

Cruz has drawn comparisons to Indiana, where state Treasurer Richard Mourdock defeated incumbent Sen. Richard Lugar in the Republican primary. But in Texas, the nation's second-most populous state, a win by a tea party-backed candidate is likely to resonate even more.

To Dewhurst's supporters, Cruz said, "We ask you to join us."

"We want you on our team," he continued. "In the heat of the campaign there have been harsh words spoken but I am hopeful that all of us can put them behind us and work together going forward."
