Planets Found by Kepler Spacecraft Likely Larger Than Thought

INDIANAPOLIS ? A large number of worlds found by NASA's Kepler alien planet-hunting space telescope are probably significantly larger than scientists previously estimated, a new study suggests.

The Kepler Space Telescope has spotted more than 2,700 potential exoplanets since its launch in 2009, and scientists using the Kitt Peak National Observatory Mayall 4-meter telescope have categorized the home stars of many of those planet candidates for the past three years. In particular, the researchers made detailed follow-up observations of 300 of the stars Kepler found likely to be harboring exoplanets.

"One of the main findings of this initial work is that our observations indicate that most of the stars we observed are slightly larger than previously thought and one quarter of them are at least 35 percent larger," astronomer and leader of the study Mark Everett said in a statement. "Therefore, any planets orbiting these stars must be larger and hotter as well. By implication, these new results reduce the number of candidate Earth-size planet analogues detected by Kepler." [Gallery: A World of Kepler Planets]

In total, the stars observed by Everett and his team host more than 360 Kepler planet candidates, as some of the stars were found to have more than one satellite.

"While Kepler is the discovery machine, it takes both Earth-based and space-based telescopes to truly understand exoplanets and how they relate to the stars they orbit," said David Silva, an astronomer at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory who contributed to the study.

Ground-based follow-up observations of stars studied by Kepler allow scientists to identify which planets, if any, may be capable of supporting life.

"Determination of accurate stellar sizes allows astronomers to more accurately identify which exoplanets are Earth analogs, fulfilling a key goal of the Kepler mission," said Steve Howell, a Kepler project scientist. Howell presented the new findings here today (June 4) at the 222nd meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

Kepler has been suffering from some serious health problems recently. An essential wheel used to keep the telescope in position while planet hunting failed after showing signs of increased friction for about the past five months.

Engineers are still trying to get the telescope back online, but if they can't, the mission might be adapted to fit Kepler's new mode of operation. Instead of staring deeply into one part of the universe, the telescope might be able to scan the sky broadly, researchers said.

The new findings will be published in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

RolePlayGateway?

Hello there! I?ve been a member for several years, and have good experience with role-playing. Many of my current partners have disappeared, so I am now looking for a role-playing partner or two. Rules. I know, many of us don't like them, but I only have a few.

1. I don't really have any limits, and if you do, let me know. However, I will only go over limits by another system, such as email or messenger, to avoid breaking RPG's rules.
2. I play both males and females, though most of the time I have stronger female characters. I do have some male characters I am willing to try, but please ask me first, as I'm not a big fan of doubling.
3. Also, I am looking for literate players, possibly even advanced. Most of all, I ask that you avoid one-liners. Also, be sure to tell me if you don't feel like continuing.

*Indicates my level of interest. !Means I have a plot, at least one that would help start things off, but it would be great to talk about a plot that could help to role-play go on for a while and still be interesting.

Genres I am most interested in now:
Fantasy
Altered DNA
Mythical Creature Market
*!Medieval Fantasy
****!Peter Pan

As you can tell, right now I am in the mood for a Peter Pan roleplay, and will love you forever if you decide to do this genre with me. Please post here if you are interested, and I can pm you plots for any genre that you are interested in.

Printing innovations provide 10-fold improvement in organic electronics

June 2, 2013 ? Through innovations to a printing process, researchers have made major improvements to organic electronics -- a technology in demand for lightweight, low-cost solar cells, flexible electronic displays and tiny sensors. The printing method is fast and works with a variety of organic materials to produce semiconductors of strikingly higher quality than what has so far been achieved with similar methods.

Organic electronics have great promise for a variety of applications, but even the highest quality films available today fall short in how well they conduct electrical current. The team from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University have developed a printing process they call FLUENCE -- fluid-enhanced crystal engineering -- that for some materials results in thin films capable of conducting electricity 10 times more efficiently than those created using conventional methods.

"Even better, most of the concepts behind FLUENCE can scale up to meet industry requirements," said Ying Diao, a SLAC/Stanford postdoctoral researcher and lead author of the study, which appeared today in Nature Materials.

Stefan Mannsfeld, a SLAC materials physicist and one of the principal investigators of the experiment, said the key was to focus on the physics of the printing process rather than the chemical makeup of the semiconductor. Diao engineered the process to produce strips of big, neatly aligned crystals that electrical charge can flow through easily, while preserving the benefits of the "strained lattice" structure and "solution shearing" printing technique previously developed in the lab of Mannsfeld's co-principal investigator, Professor Zhenan Bao of the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences, a joint SLAC-Stanford institute.

To make the advance, Diao focused on controlling the flow of the liquid in which the organic material is dissolved. "It's a vital piece of the puzzle," she said. If the ink flow does not distribute evenly, as is often the case during fast printing, the semiconducting crystals will be riddled with defects. "But in this field there's been little research done on controlling fluid flow."

Diao designed a printing blade with tiny pillars embedded in it that mix the ink so it forms a uniform film. She also engineered a way around another problem: the tendency of crystals to randomly form across the substrate. A series of cleverly designed chemical patterns on the substrate suppress the formation of unruly crystals that would otherwise grow out of alignment with the printing direction. The result is a film of large, well-aligned crystals.

X-ray studies of the group's organic semiconductors at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) allowed them to inspect their progress and continue to make improvements, eventually showing neatly arranged crystals at least 10 times longer than crystals created with other solution-based techniques, and of much greater structural perfection.

The group also repeated the experiment using a second organic semiconductor material with a significantly different molecular structure, and again they saw a notable improvement in the quality of the film. They believe this is a sign the techniques will work across a variety of materials.

Principal investigators Bao and Mannsfeld say the next step for the group is pinning down the underlying relationship between the material and the process that enabled such a stellar result. Such a discovery could provide an unprecedented degree of control over the electronic properties of printed films, optimizing them for the devices that will use them.

"That could lead to a revolutionary advance in organic electronics," Bao said. "We've been making excellent progress, but I think we're only just scratching the surface."

Report: Apple Is Finally Sealing Deals For Its Internet Radio

The New York Times is reporting that Apple's much-rumored music streaming service may soon be ready?even in time for next week's WWDC?thanks to the company finally signing contracts with major music labels.

The report suggests that Apple signed a deal with the Warner Music Group over the weekend for both recorded music rights and music publishing. It also apparently cemented an agreement with Universal Music Group over recorded music rights?but remains in discussion with Sony Music Entertainment. If it can snag the third it's home and dry, because together those three dominate the music market.

It is, of course, unclear exactly how the oft-rumored Apple music streaming service could turn out if it does materialize. But there does seems to be general consensus that it will be an internet radio service, differentiating itself from the like of Spotify and Rdio, and inevitably bad news for Pandora. Indeed, the licensing fees paid by Pandora have caused some heartache among music companies, who may now be softening to Apple's advances as a result?even if it is gunning to keep costs down.

As for the arrival of such a service at WWDC next week, well, it's an optimistic rumor. But if Apple does manage to have the majority of contracts in place ahead of June 10th it's not beyond the realms of possibility. Either way, we don't have too long to wait before we find out. [New York Times]

(AP) ? Firefighting teams in California and New Mexico are battling early season wildfires that have blackened thousands of acres and threatened homes and building, spurring numerous evacuations.

Residents of more than 1,000 homes were ordered to leave as erratic winds pushed a wildfire closer to two foothill communities, where officials said five structures, possibly homes, were destroyed Saturday.

Meanwhile, an uncontained blaze near Santa Fe, N.M., had spread to nearly 10 square miles by Saturday night, making it apparently the largest of several wildfires burning in the West as it placed the city under a blanket of haze. The thick smoke also covered the Gallinas Canyon and Las Vegas, N.M.

The fire in New Mexico's Santa Fe National Forest is burning just 25 miles from the city, prompting the Red Cross to set up an emergency shelter at a nearby high school.

Officials asked residents in about 140 homes, mainly summer residences, to evacuate as a crew of more than 400 battled the flames near the communities of Pecos and Tres Lagunas.

Crews also cleared out campgrounds and closed trailheads in the area as they worked to prevent the fire from moving toward the capital city's watershed and more populated areas.

The state Department of Health warned residents in the Pecos, Santa Fe and Espanola areas to prepare for smoke and take precautions by avoiding prolonged or physical activity outdoors.

"Potentially unhealthy conditions could occur in these communities overnight and into the early morning," a statement released by health officials said.

Another New Mexico blaze, the Thompson Ridge fire near Jemez Springs, grew to nearly two square miles by Saturday night, state forestry officials said. Between 40 and 50 homes in the area were evacuated as more than 200 crew members and a helicopter were fighting the blaze burning through pine forests and brush.

Forecasters said some rain was possible in both fire areas on Sunday as well as gusty winds.

Elsewhere in the West, fire crews worked to beat several other fires, including one in California and another in southwest Colorado.

North of Los Angeles, the wind shifted in several directions, fanning the fire in the Angeles National Forest to nearly 9 square miles, said U.S. Forest Service spokesman Nathan Judy.

It marched downhill toward Lake Hughes and Lake Elizabeth, west of Lancaster, triggering the evacuation of nearly 1,000 homes, he said.

"It's burning very intensely," he said.

Matt Corelli, also of the Forest Service, told The Associated Press early Sunday that five structures had been destroyed. He said they could be homes but crews were waiting for daylight to make a positive determination.

"That's the only number we have confirmed right now," he said.

Corelli said daylight would also provide the Forest Service with a better idea about the size of the blaze.

Officials say the fire was likely larger but thick smoke and darkness Saturday made it difficult for officials to map its actual size.

He did not know whether any structures had been burned, but Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Keith Mora told the Los Angeles Times that the blaze has destroyed five homes in the Lake Hughes area.

Daytime temperatures that topped at 105 degrees and the erratic winds worked against the nearly 1,000 firefighters on the line. Judy said the wind pushed the fire up and down steep slopes, creating embers that sparked spot fires in different directions.

In Colorado, Mike Blakeman, a spokesman for the Rio Grande National Forest, said a fire 15 miles southwest of the small town of Creede was reported. No structures have been damaged, but three homes and several outbuildings were threatened Saturday.

Nadal, Djokovic seem vulnerable at French Open

PARIS (AP) ? For the third time in three matches at this year's French Open, Rafael Nadal hardly looked himself for a set.

Unlike in the first two rounds, Nadal won his opening set Saturday, albeit barely. The takeaway, even after another victory, was the same: The owner of a record seven titles at Roland Garros is not the dominant force he usually is at the clay-court tournament.

Hours later, the man Nadal beat in last year's final and could meet in this year's semifinals, No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic, seemed vulnerable, too. At a changeover during the third set of his 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 win against No. 26 Grigo Dimitrov, Djokovic got his upper right arm ? the one he's used to win six Grand Slam titles ? massaged by a trainer.

Woods has highest 9-hole score of career

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) ? In the swirling, gusting winds at the Memorial Tournament, Tiger Woods had what even he termed a rough day.

Woods posted his highest nine-hole score as a professional when he shot an 8-over 44 on the back nine during Saturday's third round of the Memorial Tournament.

Woods walked past reporters after his round and declined interview requests. He spoke later to a PGA Tour official.

"The conditions were tough and when I missed it cost me," he said after completing a 7-over 79 that had him plummeting down the scoreboard at Muirfield Village, where he has won a record five times. "I caught the wrong gusts at the wrong time, made a couple bad swings and all in all it just went the wrong way."

His previous worst nine-hole score was a 43 on three occasions, most recently at Quail Hollow in 2010.

He wasn't alone. Playing partner Zach Johnson shot an 81.

"It was hard," said Johnson, who declined to discuss Woods or his play. "It was very hard today. There was a lot of wind."

The third member of the group, Jim Furyk, shot a 69 that was among the best scores of the day on a course that is difficult even when conditions are calm and quiet.

Asked if it was stunning when a player as good as Woods shoots such a high score, Furyk said, "Yeah, it is. He didn't hit that many bad golf shots but he got away with none of them, if that makes sense."

Woods had earlier rounds of 71 and 74 and now stands at 8-over 224 and near the bottom in the 73-player field. The 79 was his highest score by three shots at the Memorial, where he won 1999-2001, 2009 and 2012.

The 79 was his worst round since shooting a 79 in the second round at Quail Hollow in 2010 and matches the second-highest score he's had as a pro. His only worse 18-hole score is a third-round 81 at the 2002 British Open at Muirfield.

Things started getting away from him on his third hole, the signature 12th. His iron shot into the par-3 cleared a large lake but left him with a bad stance in the front bunker. He had to hit to the left side of the green ? away from the pin ? just to get out of the sand. From there he three-putted for a double bogey.

At the 15th, for the second day in a row Woods hit into the fairway but then nailed his second shot into the deep rough on a slope left of the green. He hit sideways to avoid a tree but came up short of the green, then chopped out of the thick stuff with the ball running downhill through the green into the first cut. Again he followed with a three-putt for a double-bogey.

"We didn't hit that many bad shots starting out the day and the next thing you know we were quite a few over par," Woods said. "It was a rough day. It was tough out there from beginning to end."

After failing to get up and down from just off the green to the left of the 17th hole, everything unraveled at the difficult par-4 18th. Woods' drive was down the middle of the fairway, but his second shot was well short and rolled back to a collection area in front. He spun a sand wedge shot that landed short of the pin and then spun back, rolling toward him and ending up even farther away from the pin than he was after the previous shot.

He finally chipped to 5 feet above the hole on the steeply-slanted green, then rolled his next putt down the hill and 7 feet past and missed the comebacker to settle for the triple-bogey.

"The third shot was pretty incredible, to hit it that short and have it spin that much," Furyk said. "I was up on the green, I watched it go up, spin ? it was spinning like a top ? and then came back. It had a lot of juice on it.

"He just kind of had things snowball on him and then the putter on the first side we played let him down and that added a bunch of shots as well."

Woods birdied three of the first five holes on the front nine but had bogeys at No. 6 and 9 for his 79.

"It's just one of those things where I'm sure I'm not the only one who struggled out there," he said. "I tried to fight back on the back nine but it just didn't quite materialize."

Where did Tito Ortiz, Forrest Griffin and Miesha Tate fall on Cagewriter?s Hot or Not list

On a week shortened by holiday, MMA still kept us busy. Let's see who was having a good week, and who wasn't.

Hot -- Forrest Griffin: After being a pioneer for the UFC, Griffin announced he was hanging up his clothes. He did it on his own terms, and will stay with the UFC in some executive role.

Not -- Jenna Jameson and Tito Ortiz: The one-time UFC champ and his one-time adult actress ex-girlfriend are going through a very messy break-up. For the most part, it has been tabloid fodder that had nothing to do with MMA. But on Thursday, Jameson made allegations that Ortiz did drugs during his MMA career, and posted what she thought were damning pictures. Ortiz denied her allegations, and said he is focused on raising their kids.

Fatigue and sleep linked to Major League Baseball performance and career longevity

May 31, 2013 ? Two new studies show that fatigue may impair strike-zone judgment during the 162 game Major League Baseball season, and a MLB player's sleepiness can predict his longevity in the league.

One study found that MLB players' strike-zone judgment was worse in September than in April in 24 of 30 teams. When averaged across all teams, strike-zone judgment was significantly worse in September compared with April. The statistical model demonstrated strong predictive value through the season.

"Plate discipline -- as measured by a hitter's tendency to swing at pitches outside of the strike zone -- got progressively worse over the course of a Major League Baseball season, and this decline followed a linear pattern that could be predicted by data from the six previous seasons," said principal investigator Scott Kutscher, MD, assistant professor of sleep and neurology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. "We theorize that this decline is tied to fatigue that develops over the course of the season due to a combination of frequency of travel and paucity of days off."

Data analysis tracked the frequency with which MLB batters swung at pitches outside of the strike zone during the 2012 season. Data were sorted by month for all 30 teams and compared between the first and last month of the season. Data for each team also were compared to a statistical model, based on data from the 2006 to 2011 seasons, which predicts a linear decline in strike-zone judgment per month.

Kutscher noted that the results are strikingly consistent and seem to contradict the conventional wisdom that plate discipline should improve during the season through frequent practice and repetition.

"Teams on the East or West Coast, with good or bad records, they all follow the same pattern of worsening plate discipline," he said. "This study suggests hitters always demonstrate the best judgment when at bat in the first month of the season."

He added that teams may be able to gain a competitive edge by focusing on fatigue management.

"A team that recognizes this trend and takes steps to slow or reverse it -- by enacting fatigue-mitigating strategies, especially in the middle and late season, for example -- can gain a large competitive advantage over their opponent," he said. "This may have already occurred, as the San Francisco Giants -- an outlier in the study in that their plate discipline improved during the 2012 season -- went on to win the World Series."

Another study found a significant and profound relationship between the sleepiness of a MLB player and his longevity in the league. As baseline self-reported scores of sleepiness on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale increased, the likelihood that a player would be in the league three seasons later decreased linearly. For example, 72 percent of players with a baseline ESS score of 5 were still in the league at the follow-up point, compared with only 39 percent of players with an ESS score of 10 and 14 percent of players with an ESS score of 15.

"We were shocked by how linear the relationship was," said principal investigator W. Christopher Winter, MD, medical director of the Martha Jefferson Hospital Sleep Medicine Center in Charlottesville, Va. "It is a great reminder that sleepiness impairs performance. From a sports perspective, this is incredibly important. What this study shows is that we can use the science of sleep to predict sports performance."

Prior to the 2010 season, ESS data were collected from a random selection of 80 MLB players representing three teams. This study group doubled the sample size of Winter's pilot study, which he presented last June at SLEEP 2012. Player status three seasons later was determined on Dec. 16, 2012. A player who was demoted to a lower league, unsigned, or no longer playing was deemed "inactive."

Winter added that teams easily could implement sleepiness screening as part of their player evaluation system.

"I can envision simple questions about sleep being a part of the battery of tests professional organizations use to evaluate prospects," he said.

He also noted that players and their teams could benefit tremendously if a sleep specialist diagnoses and treats the condition causing a player to experience excessive daytime sleepiness.

"That player may suddenly become far more valuable," Winter said.

The Acid Test: Changing Seas Trip Up Baby Squid

Squid could be in trouble as the oceans grow more acidic, new research finds.

As humans pump carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the oceans absorb about a third of the greenhouse gas. This buffers terrestrial creatures from even more extreme effects of climate change ? without the oceans, Earth's atmosphere would contain far more than the approximately 400 parts per million of carbon dioxide that it does today. However, the dissolved carbon dioxide makes the oceans more acidic, possibly affecting thousands of marine species.

Squid, it seems, may be among the most vulnerable, with consequences that could trickle through the marine ecosystem. A new study published today (May 31) in the journal PLOS ONE finds that squid raised in more highly acidified ocean water hatch more slowly and are smaller when they hatch than squid raised in ocean water at today's pH levels. The acid-exposed squid also have abnormal statoliths, which are internal, calcified structures that function like the mammalian inner ear to help squid keep their balance and orient themselves.

"We're worried these guys won't be able to swim and behave properly," study researcher T. Aran Mooney, a biologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, said of the acidified squid. [Release the Kraken! Photos of Giant Squid]

Acidifying oceans

Mooney and his colleagues trawled for Atlantic longfin squid (Doryteuthis pealeii) from the Vineyard Sound off of Massachusetts. The researchers brought the squid to the laboratory and kept some in tanks with a pH of about 8. On the pH scale, 7 is neutral, and 8 slightly basic. The open ocean today has a pH of about 8, which is a decline of about 0.1 pH units since pre-industrial times, an increase in acidification attributable to carbon dioxide produced by humans.

Researchers kept the rest of the squid in tanks with a more acidic pH of about 7.3. Climate projections suggest the open ocean could reach this level of acidification in about 100 to 200 years, Mooney told LiveScience. In coastal areas, where acidity is more variable, a pH of 7.3 sometimes already occurs.

The researchers allowed the squid to mate and lay eggs in the tanks, and then tracked how long it took those eggs to hatch. The scientists found that squid raised in a more acidic environment developed more slowly, emerging from their eggs about 24 hours later, on average, than the squid placed in normal ocean conditions. The delay is bad news for baby squid, which are defenseless fish-food in their egg stage.

"The longer you're an egg sitting there, the more likely you are to get eaten," Mooney said.

Key to the ecosystem

The squid reared in acidified water were also smaller than normal when they hatched, with an average body length of 0.07 inches (1.78 millimeters) versus 0.071 inches (1.81 millimeters) for squid hatched in normal conditions. That smaller size, again, could make squid more vulnerable to predators, Mooney said. The miniaturized squid might also have a harder time swimming and migrating than their larger brethren.

Finally, the researchers dissected some of the squid at each day of development to examine the stony statoliths that give the animals their equilibrium. The scientists found that the statoliths of acidified squid were irregularly formed and porous, suggesting that the water pH disrupted the development of these structures.

Squid are a keystone of the ocean ecosystem, Mooney said. They're important prey for animals ranging from fish to marine mammals to sea birds. They're also an important food source for humans, who pull about 3 million tons of squid from the ocean each year. Thus, damage to squid populations could reverberate throughout the ocean ecosystem.

The researchers don't yet know, however, what threshold acidification would have to cross to cause damage to squid; nor is it clear how other squid species will react. The next step, Mooney said, is to raise squid in multiple pH levels to figure out the effect of each "dose" of acidification.

"Now we're kind of filling in those gaps," Mooney said.

(AP) ? Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is delivering a two-pronged message to China ? holding out hope for a slowly improving military relationship while issuing a stern warning on cyberattacks.

Speaking at a security conference in Singapore, Hagel also is assuring Asian nations that despite sharp budget cuts, the Pentagon will continue to shift its military troops, ships and aircraft to the Pacific region.

He says the U.S. has expressed concerns about the growing cyberthreat, some of which appears to be tied to the Chinese government and military. He is not the first U.S. official to publicly blame China for computer-based attacks that steal U.S. government and industry secrets, but he delivered the rebuke in China's backyard, with members of Beijing's government in the audience.
