H-ASIA December 29, 2011 NBR Q&A on India's Demographic Outlook ********** From: Tracy Timmons-Gray [ttimmonsgray@nbr.org] NBR has published a new Q&A with AEI's Nicholas Eberstadt that explores the implications of India's population growth and how this rapid increase could affect the region. A link to the full interview and a summary are below. "India's Demographic Outlook: Implications and Trends" Q&A with Nicholas Eberstadt, American Enterprise Institute Link: http://m.nbr.org/tESenW SUMMARY Over the next two to three decades, India's demographic composition will significantly affect the country's economic and strategic capabilities. NBR spoke with expert demographer Nicholas Eberstadt about what India's population profile will likely look like and how it compares to another major state in the region, China. Dr. Eberstadt, the Henry Wendt Scholar in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute, a NBR Senior Advisor and Strategic Asia contributor, argues that while India will benefit from a surge in highly educated manpower, to fully realize these gains it must acknowledge the significant portion of its population that is still impoverished and illiterate. Read the full interview for a discussion of the following questions: - What will India's population likely look like in twenty years? - What are some of the strengths and challenges posed by India's demographic profile? - How do the differences in India's and China's demographic profiles affect each country's economic outlook? - How might India's demographics impact Indian immigration to the United States?
