Spain stocks fall sharply after Moody's downgrade

(AP) ? Spanish stocks dropped sharply early Friday morning after ratings agency Moody's downgraded its credit score of 16 Spanish banks in the latest blow to the troubled financial sector.

Moody's acted late Thursday, citing banks' load of non-performing loans amid a recession-plagued economy, their trouble raising financing on capital markets and the government's sovereign debt problems, among other woes.

Spain is in the eye of the storm of the eurozone debt crisis amid worries that its banks are overexposed to an imploded real estate bubble and the government, fighting recession and a nearly 25 percent jobless rate, could not afford to bail them out if it needed to.

The country's Ibex 35 index was off more than 2 points shortly after trading began Friday. Banks were among the biggest losers. But both the index and bank stocks recovered later. Banco Santander, SA and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, SA were up more than three points. Both were mentioned in the downgrade.

Shares in Bankia SA, a recently nationalized bank, took a roller coaster ride Thursday, ending up sharply lower on reports depositors pulled out a ?1 billion in a week. But they were up 9 percent in early trading Friday. On the bond market the interest rate on 10-year bonds was down six basis points at 6.23.

50 Cent: Hospitalized, Comforted By Stuffed Animals

It looks like 50 Cent is in the hospital and gearing up for surgery.

It's unclear why, but follow his Twitter feed and you should find out soon enough. Guy has been updating it a ton. Not a lot else to do there, right?

The rapper is currently seeking treatment for something, and while the medical details are scarce, there's no shortage of amusing photographs.

Check out this one. Downright artistic, Fiddy:

50 Cent Hospitalized

“I’m in the hospital but my gangsta grillz LOST TAPE is done so it will be out on time,” he Tweeted. He added, “I don’t want to go into surgery.”

Who does, honestly? 50 Cent also wrote, “Do not do a @djdrama gangsta grillz is all I get. Ain’t this a b*tch. I give 15 tracks you give me this."

Whatever the hell that means, and whatever his ailment might be, we hope he's back on his feet soon! Though him being there has its benefits.

Online Casinos and Online Gaming: Bringing the Best to You ...

A brick and mortar casino, while being fun and glamorous, can present some difficulties to a person who is truly passionate about the traditional games offered at a gambling establishment. ??First of all, a casino may be far away and costly to get to, the drive or transit to get there may be dangerous, and finally, the noisy crowds swarming about the slot machines and tables can be off-putting. ?Online casinos present none of these problems and are the perfect solution for anyone who enjoys a good night of gambling fun but doesn?t want the hassle of a conventional casino.

?
Many people who love playing slot machines and blackjack or poker live in rural areas where the only profitable gaming option is the local bingo hall. ??Bingo is great, but it lacks the excitement and promise of big wins. ?Driving to a casino is not an option as it would simply take hours and hours, and a flight would simply cost too much. ?Online casinos solve this problem because no driving or expensive airline tickets are required; an internet connection is all that is needed to play all the favorite, time-tested games. ?Online casinos save time and money for those who live far away.

?
Even people who live relatively close to a casino will prefer an online casino because it means they needn?t worry about driving into the city where most casinos are located. ?People who like to gamble but hate taking public transit will also find that online gaming and gambling will work better for them. ?As most commuters know, taking transit outside of the busy times of day can be uncomfortable at best and very dangerous at worst, especially late at night when most people like to go to casinos for a night out. ?Muggings, assaults, and attacks by unsavory characters are the norm either out on the street or on the buses and trains. ?Online casinos are the much safer option; all of these fearsome situations can be avoided completely.

?
Finally, what makes online casinos and online gambling so great is that one can totally avoid the crowds and swarms of people that head to the casinos on weekends. ?All people who enjoy slot machines want to avoid the Lookie-Lou?s who wait like vultures to pounce on the first vacant spot. ??People who take gambling seriously want to avoid the droves of young adults who drink too much and are too loud and disruptive at the casino, and everyone can agree that it?s no fun when a casino is packed cheek-to cheek and elbows flying everywhere. ?Online casinos deliver the best of the casino and gaming experience with none of the potential nonsense that can happen inside a traditional establishment.

?
Online gambling offers the best of the casino in the comfort and safety of your own home. ?Avoid the long trips, the costs, the dangerous drive or commute and the obnoxious characters that can sometimes sully the casino gaming experience. ?With online casinos and gaming, sit back, relax, and concentrate on what online casinos do best: provide you with the best gaming experience possible.

Facebook investors to cash out more shares

(AP) ? Insiders and early Facebook investors are taking advantage of increasing investor demand and selling more of their stock in the company's initial public offering, the company said Wednesday.

Facebook said in a regulatory filing that 84 million shares, worth up to $3.2 billion, are being added to what's shaping up to be the decade's hottest IPO.

Facebook's stock is expected to begin trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Friday under the ticker symbol "FB".

The entire increase comes from insiders and early investors, so the company won't benefit from the additional sales.

The biggest increases come from investment firms DST Global and Tiger Global. Goldman Sachs is doubling the number of shares it is selling. Facebook board members Peter Thiel and James Breyer are also selling more shares.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg isn't increasing the number of shares he's selling.

The news comes a day after Facebook raised the expected price of the stock to a range of $34 to $38 per share, up from its previous range of $28 to $35.

At the high end of the price range, the IPO would raise $16 billion without the overallotment option reserved to meet extra demand. That would make it the third-largest U.S. IPO in history, ahead of General Motors in 2010, according to Renaissance Capital.

The IPO is the most anticipated in years and would value Facebook overall at more than $100 billion.

The offering is expected to get a final price Thursday evening.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Facebook said current shareholders are now offering approximately 241 million shares, up from about 157 million shares previously.

Even though Zuckerberg isn't increasing the number of shares he is selling, the additional sales will trim his voting control to 55.8 percent from 57.3 percent. That's because he has voting control over some shares now owned by investment firms, which will be sold in the offering.

The run-up to Facebook's IPO occurs as companies debate the effectiveness of Facebook as an advertising platform. That examination sharpened Tuesday, when General Motors Co., the nation's largest automaker, said it would stop advertising on Facebook.

At the same time, however, GM competitor Ford Motor Co. reaffirmed its commitment to Facebook, saying on Tuesday that its relationship was stronger than ever.

Facebook has more than 900 million users who log in at least once a month, but it makes only a few dollars per year from each one, chiefly through advertising. Advertisers have been complaining that it's difficult to make good use of Facebook.

A person briefed on GM's advertising said the company will stop running paid advertising on Facebook by mid-summer because advertising agencies and third-party companies that reviewed the ads determined the company wasn't getting much back for its $10 million in annual spending.

The person, who asked not to be identified because GM's ad strategy is private, said the Facebook ads didn't generate much in the way of action by consumers to consider GM products.

GM will, however, maintain Facebook pages for all of its brands and models. These are popular and do generate consideration of its products, the person said. But they don't generate revenue for Facebook.

GM spends about $30 million a year creating content such as pictures and videos to post on the pages, the person said.

More than 3.1 million people on Facebook "like" two pages dedicated to the Camaro muscle car, and 1.2 million "like" the Chevrolet brand. GM also has brand pages for individual countries. For instance, Chevrolet Egypt gets almost 200,000 "likes".

GM said that it constantly reviews whether its advertising in all media reaches the right age and income demographics. It could reconsider Facebook ads later in the year, the person said.

GM's advertising spending is a tiny fraction of Facebook's 2011 advertising revenue of $3.15 billion. But it could be symptomatic of Facebook's weak appeal to advertisers. Its chief conduit to reach users is through so-called "display ads" ? boxes that show up on the right hand of Facebook's page. They're tuned to users' interests and activities, but they don't connect as well as Google Inc.'s search-based ads.

Arctic seabirds adapt to climate change

ScienceDaily (May 15, 2012) ? The planet is warming up, especially at the poles. How do organisms react to this rise in temperatures? An international team(1) led by a CNRS researcher from the Center for Functional and Evolutionary Ecology(2) has shown that little auks, the most common seabirds in the Arctic, are adapting their fishing behavior to warming surface waters in the Greenland Sea. So far, their reproductive and survival rates have not been affected. However, further warming could threaten the species.

This research, supported in particular by the French Polar Institute (IPEV) and a US-Norwegian program, is published in the journal Marine Ecology Progress Series dated 21 May 2012.

Little auks are among the smallest (150 g) and most common (40-80 million) seabirds in the North Atlantic. They inhabit the rocky coasts of Greenland and Spitsbergen. To feed themselves and their chicks, they specialize in foraging for small planktonic crustaceans called copepods(3), catching up to 65,000 individuals each day. The birds seek out cold current areas, avoiding more temperate waters. Indeed, the icy waters flowing south from the Arctic Ocean via the Fram Strait, between Greenland and Spitsbergen, are home to large Arctic copepods, Calanus hyperboreus, which are very rich in fat. Another species of copepod, C. finmarchicus, thrives in more temperate waters, but it is smaller and supplies less energy. Because of their specialized diet and high food intake, little auks are a reliable indicator for testing the impact of climate change on this region.

For three years, in summer, the researchers studied three colonies of little auks on either side of the Greenland Sea. The difference in surface water temperatures between the warmest and coldest site is 5?C. The warmest site, located in Spitsbergen, reproduces the conditions predicted for the late 21st century in the coldest site (East Greenland). Such temperature differences lead to major changes in the abundance and average size of zooplankton, reducing the quality of little auks' food resources (copepods).

Surprisingly, the birds have managed to make up for the warming of surface waters in the Greenland Sea by altering their diet and extending the duration of their foraging trips at sea. They travel further and for longer in order to feed in areas where foraging is more successful.

So far, little auks have therefore managed to adapt to the effects of warming surface waters in the Greenland Sea. However, a 5?C temperature rise remains below the maximum temperature increase of 7?C predicted by climate models for the Arctic in 2100. Yet it seems that little auks have reached the limits of their physiological and behavioral capacities. More intense warming could therefore cause their decline as well as a major disruption of marine ecosystems in the Arctic. The scientists are now investigating the impact of global warming on the winter survival of these seabirds.

Notes:

1 -- The team brings together researchers from the US (Pomona College and Alaska Science Center), France (CNRS), Norway (Norwegian Polar Institute), Poland (Polish Academy of Sciences), and the UK (University of Aberdeen).

2 -- CNRS/Universit?s de Montpellier 1, 2 and 3/SupAgro/Cirad/EPHE/IRD/INRA

3 -- Copepods are the main component of zooplankton (which makes up the exclusive diet of little auks).

Lenovo announces the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, a 14-inch Ultrabook with Ivy Bridge, optional 3G and a 1600 x 900 display

Image
Yes, that laptop you see up there is called the ThinkPad X1 and yes, it's the successor to the X1 we reviewed around this time last year. But, folks, this isn't your typical refresh. The X1, once a 13-inch system, has grown up into a 14-inch ultraportable, now being marketed as an Ultrabook. Despite gaining an inch in screen real estate, though, it manages to be both thinner and lighter than its predecessor: 3.0 pounds and roughly 18mm (.71 inches) thick, down from 3.7 pounds / .84 inches. (As the name suggests, carbon fiber is the secret ingredient.) Chances are, you won't have the luxury of comparing the two systems side by side, but coming from someone who reviewed the original, we can assure you the difference is noticeable, even going off of sheer muscle memory. That bodes well for people picking up the X1 for the first time.

But those aren't the only changes the X1 has undergone. Lenovo also bumped the resolution from 1366 x 768 to 1600 x 900, and made some subtle tweaks to the backlit, spill-resistant keyboard. 3G connectivity is also a major selling point, though that was an optional feature last time around, too. As you could've guessed, it packs an Ivy Bridge processor, coupled with Intel's vPro management technology and (we assume) integrated graphics. Like the last-gen model, it makes use of Lenovo's RapidCharge tech, which allows the notebook to re-charge up to 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes. Unfortunately, though, the company's staying mum on battery life claims for the time being. Another teensy detail we don't know? Price. So far, we only know it'll go on sale sometime this summer. Until then, though, check out some teaser shots below, along with a short hands-on video after the break.

Samsung SCX-4835FR

The Samsung SCX-4835FR ($450 street) is the sort of unexciting monochrome laser MFP that does its job well enough, but without offering anything to make it stand out from the crowd. Like some other Samsung MFPs I've reviewed recently, including, for example, the Samsung SCX-4729FD ($250 street, 3 stars), it's slower than you'd expect from the engine rating, which is 33 pages per minute (ppm) in this case. However, it offers all the features most offices need. As long as you're not overly concerned with speed, that's enough to make it worth considering.

Aimed at the range from micro to mid-size offices, but most appropriate for micro to small offices or workgroups because of its slow speed, the SCX-4835FR ?is too big to share a desk with comfortably, at 17.6 by 18.5 by 17.2 (HWD) inches. On the other hand, it's small enough to find room for easily even in a micro office, and its Ethernet connection makes it easy to share on a network.

As you would probably expect for an office MFP, the SCX-4835FR can print and fax from, as well as scan to a PC, even over a network, and it works as a standalone copier and fax machine. In addition, it can both scan to and print from a USB memory key, and it includes a 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF) to complement the letter size flatbed, and let you scan legal-size pages. The ADF also duplexes (scans one side of the page, then turns it over to scan the other) making it easy to scan stacks of paper printed on both sides of the page.

The printer's paper handling is good enough to count as a plus, with a 250-sheet paper tray, a 50-sheet multipurpose tray for easy printing on different types of paper, and a built-in duplexer for printing on both sides of the page. For most micro and small offices this should translate to both ample capacity and welcome flexibility. For those who need more, Samsung sells an optional 520-sheet tray ($200 street) to boost the paper capacity to a total of 820 sheets.

Setup and Speed
For my tests, I installed the SCX-4835FR driver and software on a Windows Vista system, and connected the printer directly to the network. Installation was standard fare.

The printer was a lot slower than you'd expect from the 33 ppm engine speed?which should be close to the speed you'll see when printing a text file without any graphics or photos. I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective 3.3 ppm.

For comparison, the SCX-4729FD , rated at 29 ppm, came in at 8.2 ppm, and the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-8480DN ($400 street, 4 stars), rated at 32 ppm, managed an effective 10.6 ppm. That makes the SCX-4835FR slow for the price and slow for the engine rating.

Output Quality
I wish I could report that the printer makes up for its slow speed with dazzling output quality. Unfortunately, however, the quality is a bit below par across the board. The good news is that even below-par text for a mono laser is more than good enough for most business needs. It's not suitable for serious desktop publishing, but for anything less demanding than that, you shouldn't have a problem with it unless you have an unusual need for small fonts.

Graphics and photo quality are both at the bottom of a tight range where the vast majority of mono laser MFPs fall. Graphics are easily good enough for any internal business need. Depending on your level of perfectionism, you may or may not consider them good enough for PowerPoint handouts or other material going to potential clients or customers. Photo quality is good enough to print recognizable photos from Web pages or the like. Whether you?d consider them suitable for, say, a client newsletter, will depend on how critical an eye you have.

All told, the Samsung SCX-4835FR offers the right set of features for most small offices, including such conveniences as the ADF and the ability to scan to and print from a USB key. It's slow, but not intolerably slow, and although the output quality isn't stellar, it's good enough for most business use. The only real issue is that it costs a lot for what it delivers. The Brother MFC-8480DN , or even Samsung's own SCX-4729FD offer better value?aka more bang per buck. But if you don't mind the price, or can find the Samsung SCX-4835FR for a sufficiently low price, it's otherwise a perfectly reasonably choice.

Visualized: HP's all-in-one PCs over the years, one from 1983

Visualized: HP's all-in-one PCs over the years, one from 1983

HP's TouchSmart sub-brand and its other AIOs should be no stranger to many PC advocates, but in case you've never come across one before, the company's laid all of them out on one side of its Global Influencer Summit in Shanghai. Models range from the TouchSmart IQ770 launched back in 2007, all the way to the recently shipped Z1 workstation and even the just-announced t410 Smart Zero Client; but the real gem of the booth is that little beige HP 150 right in the middle -- it's one of the first-ever touchscreen PCs, dating back to 1983, powered by an 8MHz Intel 8088 chip, ran MS-DOS and cost a mere $3,995.

Whilst on the topic, HP's Vice President of Industrial Design Stacy Wolff shared some interesting stats: his team found that much like laptops, there are very different screen size preferences across different regions, with the US showing strong interest in 20-inch and 23-inch HP AIOs, whereas China much prefers 20-inch over 21.5-inch and 23-inch. With the big jump in AIO market penetration in each region between 2008 to 2012 (almost doubled in Japan and the US; and an even bigger leap for other markets), HP predicts that these machines will continue to steadily increase market penetration across more price points -- this was illustrated with what it conveniently calls the "AIO wedge" on a chart. Feel free to take a gander at our gallery for more tidbits.
