Paired CT scans catch chemo-killing of liver tumors in real time

Dec. 31, 2012 ? Using two successive pairs of specialized CT scans, a team of Johns Hopkins and Dutch radiologists has produced real-time images of liver tumors dying from direct injection of anticancer drugs into the tumors and their surrounding blood vessels. Within a minute, the images showed whether the targeted chemotherapy did or did not choke off the tumors' blood supply and saved patients a month of worry about whether the treatment, known as chemoembolization, was working or not, and whether repeat or more powerful treatments were needed.

The Johns Hopkins team's report about this novel use of dual-phase cone-bean computed tomography, or DPCBCT, an imaging technique developed at Johns Hopkins, is set to appear in the January 2013 edition of the journal Radiology. The diagnostic scans were performed on 27 men and women with inoperable liver cancer.

"This new scanning method is giving us almost instant feedback about the value of injecting antitumor drugs directly into large liver tumors and their surrounding blood vessels in an effort to quickly kill them, and to prevent the cancer from spreading," says senior study investigator and interventional radiologist Jean-Francois Geschwind, M.D.

Geschwind says if further testing proves equally successful, the paired use of cone-beam CT scans, which are already approved for single-scan use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, could supplant the current practice of MRI scanning a month after chemoembolization to check its effects.

"Patients should not have to endure the uncertainty of waiting weeks or more to find out if their chemoembolization was successful in fighting their liver cancer," says Geschwind, a professor in the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and its Kimmel Cancer Center.

"Dual-phase cone-beam CT avoids such delays, which also could allow the cancer to grow and spread and, ultimately, compromise chances of remission," he says.

Avoiding delays is particularly important, he says, for people with moderate to advanced stages of the disease, when liver tumors are too large or too numerous to surgically remove, and for whom chemoembolization is the main treatment option. Half of such liver cancer patients succumb within nine months, and liver transplantation is only an option for a quarter of those whose tumors have not spread outside the liver.

The newer DPCBCT scans, in which X-rays are detected by a device the size of a large laptop that can be placed directly below or above the operating room table, have the added advantage of being performed in the same room, or interventional radiology suite, as patients getting chemoembolization.

In their new study, Geschwind and his colleagues found that the initial shrinkage seen with DPCBCT scans taken before and after chemoembolization matched up almost perfectly with MRI scans taken a month later. Tumor death was 95 percent, the same as that seen by MRI. A total of 47 tumors were closely monitored in the study to assess how well DPCBCT tracked tumor death after chemoembolization.
All study participants were treated at The Johns Hopkins Hospital between March and December 2009.

In DPCBCT scanning, a chemical contrast dye is injected into the artery that supplies blood flow to the liver and tumor right before the chemotherapy drug is injected, to enhance the X-ray image. The first set of scans highlights key blood vessels feeding the tumor, as dye flows in and out of the tumor. The second set of scans is performed immediately after chemoembolization, to gauge tumor and key blood vessel death. Computer software is used to sharpen and analyze differences between the images.

The entire DPCBCT scanning time, researchers say, is between 20 seconds and 30 seconds, and the total amount of radiation exposure from the dual scanning averages 3.08 milliseiverts, which is less than half the amount of radiation involved in a modern abdominal 64-CT scan. Cone-beam CT scanners also emit an X-ray, but unlike other CT scanners, the cone-beam type of X-ray is projected onto one large, rectangular detector, roughly a foot and a half long -- and produces a telltale conical shape. The size of the cone-beam CT detector allows for single scans that can capture images the size of most people's entire liver. More powerful 64-CT and 320-CT scanners involve multiple detector rows.

Chemoembolization entails the use of tiny beads containing the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin injected directly into liver tumors.

Ultrathin catheters, about the width of a human hair, are threaded through blood vessels to deliver the drugs, which seep from the beads for several weeks.

Geschwind is leading clinical trials under way at Johns Hopkins and other centers to assess whether the combination drug treatment works for liver cancer patients. Early results have shown promise, with patients with advanced disease living 10 months to 15 months longer.

Geschwind says they plan improvements in image quality in DPCBCT scans, hoping further refinements will encourage physicians to adopt the technique. They also plan updates to the navigational software that, like GPS, can track blood vessels feeding each tumor, and provide more precise and greater numbers of targets.

Liver cancer kills nearly 20,000 Americans each year, and is much more prevalent outside the United States, where it is among the top three causes of cancer death in the world. Experts cite the rising numbers of hepatitis C infections, which cause chronic liver inflammation and are a leading risk factor for liver cancer.

Funding support for this study was provided by the French Society of Radiology and Philips Research North America in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. Philips, whose parent company is based in the Netherlands, manufactures the CBCT device used in the study. Additional funding support was provided by the U.S. National Cancer Institute, a member of the National Institutes of Health. The corresponding grant numbers are NCI R01-CA160771 and UL1 RR-025005.

The study lead investigators were Romaric Loffroy, M.D., a radiology fellow at Johns Hopkins, and MingDe Lin, Ph.D., a Philips biomedical engineer based at Johns Hopkins who has been collaborating with Geschwind for the past five years to perfect the DPCBCT technique.

In addition to Geschwind, Loffroy and Lin, other Johns Hopkins researchers involved in this research were Gayane Yenokyan, Ph.D., at the university's Bloomberg School of Public Health; and Pramod Rao, M.D.; Nikhil Bhagat, M.D.; and Eleni Liapi, M.D., all at the School of Medicine. Philips investigators involved were Niels Noordhoek, Ph.D.; Alessandro Radaelli, Ph.D.; and Jarl Blijd, M.Sc.

The chemoembolization research study was funded by Bayer HealthCare and Onyx Pharmaceuticals, manufacturer of sorafenib, and Biocompatibles, makers of the microbeads. Geschwind is a consultant to Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, and to Biocompatibles. The terms of these arrangements are being managed by The Johns Hopkins University in accordance with its conflict-of-interest policies.

BC's York breaks NCAA hockey win record

Boston College coach Jerry York became the NCAA hockey career victory leader Saturday, directing the top-ranked Eagles to a 5-2 win over Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday in the Mariucci Classic.

The 67-year-old York is 925-558-95 in 41 seasons to move past former Michigan State coach Ron Mason for the record. In 19 seasons at Boston College, York is 458-223-61.

York downplayed the accomplishment.

"I've always been about the team," York said. "When I was a player, I was like that. Since I've been a coach, I've been like that. I've never really sought individual goals."

York began his career as a 26-year-old head coach at Clarkson in 1972, then took over for Mason at Bowling Green before heading to Boston College. He has won four national titles with the Eagles to go with one at Bowling Green.

York's teams have a record 37 wins in the NCAA tournament. They have won the Hockey East tournament nine times and five Beanpot titles ? including the last three in a row.

York said his thoughts Saturday were on beating the Chargers.

"Our focus is on our team," he said. "We have a chance to win a trophy. We're focused squarely on our team."

York said he plans to keep coaching as long at Boston College will let him.

"I feel good. I feel healthy. I enjoy what I do," York said. "As long as BC feels as though I'm doing a good job, I'll keep on moving."

Melvin Guillard survives Jamie Varner slam but loses UFC 155 bout

Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner staked a late claim to the UFC 155 Fight of the Night bonus with a bout that ended in a split decision. Varner won it on the judges' cards, 30-27, 27-30, 29-28.

Varner gained an edge early in the bout by tagging Guillard in the first round. Guillard showed good kicks, but couldn't escape Varner's takedowns for much of the bout. But the most frightening moment of the bout came late in the third round.

[Complete UFC 155 recap: Cain Velasquez mauls Junior dos Santos]

The two were scrambling on the ground for position when Guillard took Varner's back. Varner stood up, and with Guillard's head pointed to the ground, Varner slammed his opponent to the ground. Amazingly, Guillard was not knocked out or injured from the move. The fight ended seconds after, and the two embraced.

?This was a very emotional fight for both of us," Varner said after the bout. "After what happened a few weeks ago at the "TUF Finale" event, we were both ready to compete. I knew we would eventually get in the Octagon and squash our beef and I definitely feel that we did. I?m happy about my performance, I feel that I was able to dominate the fight wherever we ended up and I?m glad I got the win.?

Varner and Guillard were originally scheduled to fight during "The Ultimate Fighter" finale on Dec. 15, but illness kept Varner from the cage. Guillard was understandably upset about the delay, leading to trash talk.

IPad app

Just a quick thought on the iPad app in development.

Often I access my mfi from within as well as without my network.

It would be great if we could have a primary and secondary server IP.

So that we can with minimal change or effort be able to access the mfi server on both a public and private IP depending on where we physically are located.

Ouya game consoles now on their way to developers ? CNET ...

The Android-based game consoles are shipping to people eager to get their hands on the first developer editions.

Ouya is now shipping its game console to early developers.

Ouya is now shipping its game console to early developers.

(Credit: Ouya)

Developers who ordered an Ouya game console should soon find one in front of their doors.

The folks at Oyua confirmed today that 1,200 developer consoles have been shipped and should reach eager buyers in the next few days.

Created this past year, Ouya is an attempt to bring gaming back to your TV. Designed to hook up to your television, the Ouya console plans to be home to a platform of Android-based games built by interested developers.

The console itself is the brainchild of Julie Uhrman, a video game industry veteran who wanted to lay the ground for an open ecosystem of games playable on your TV. Ouya truly kicked off this past July after Uhrman and her colleagues took the product to Kickstarter to raise funds from potential backers and early adopters.

The Kickstarter campaign proved a savvy move as the project raised more than $ 2 million dollars just in its first day. By the time fundraising had ended, Ouya had raised $ 8.5 million.

Ordinary folks who joined the Kickstarter campaign paid as little as $ 95 to get a finished Ouya, which is due to ship in April. But those eager to play with the console in its earlier stages and build games for the platform shelled out $ 699 to get access to the developer edition.

?As we said previously, these kits are very special,? Ouya said in its blog today. ?They?re a one-off design ? ?rare drops? for the most discerning and faithful developers whom we?re looking forward to meeting in the coming months.?

Unlike the Xbox or Wii, the Ouya console is a tiny cube you can easily hold in one hand. The developer console is designed to be opened, so that hardware hackers can play around with its innards.

The Ouya Dev Console package comes packed with a number of goodies, including a translucent version of console itself, two translucent controllers with batteries, a power adapter, an HDMI cable, a micro-USB cable, and an official welcome letter.

The kit doesn?t contain any actual games since it?s strictly aimed at developers who want to gear up some games.

Ouya offers a Developer Portal site where Ouya game designers can download the development kit, pick up documentation, and upload their games. The folks at Ouya caution that these consoles are still a work in progress, so early testers can expect plenty of bugs. Developers are encouraged to leave their feedback at the company?s forums at devs.ouya.tv.

Non-developers can pre-order a finished console and single controller for $ 99, with a second controller priced at $ 30. The order page currently lists the expected delivery date as April 2013.

In return, Ouya is promising a wide range of games for the final platform, including those from development companies already lined up. Games will come with free playable demos, so gamers can decide if they want to ante up for the full version. And since Ouya is based on Android, any game or other app already developed for Android can be played or accessed via Ouya?s online store.

Samsung says it will ship half a billion phones in 2013

Samsung expects to sell 510 million phones in 2013, the company announced on Wednesday. Samsung says most of those devices will be smart phones, cementing the company's status as the world's biggest phone manufacturer.

Samsung may be the biggest phone maker in the world, but it's not resting on its laurels: the Korean company announced on Wednesday that it expects to ship 510 million handsets in 2013, three-quarters of which will be smart phones.

Samsung shipped 420 million handsets in 2012, which means that if its 2013 estimate is correct it'll be a 20 percent jump for the company. The Korea Times reports that 390 million of its 2013 sales are expected to be smart phones, and that Samsung is counting on pulling away from its biggest smart-phone rival, Apple.

That estimate may be a little bit rosy: market research firm Gartner previously predicted that Samsung would sell between 250 and 300 smart phones in 2013. But no matter how you slice it, Samsung's sales have been rising sharply. The company sold 0.6 million smart phones in 2009, 23.9 million in 2010, and 97.4 million in 2011.

What's on the menu for Samsung in 2013? The company will continue to develop its popular line of Galaxy smart phones and tablets, which are rivals to Apple's iPhone and iPad. It also plans to release a line of Windows Phone 8 handsets to compete with offerings from Nokia and HTC. As fast 4G LTE networks grow, Samsung will also double down on LTE-compatible devices to meet demand, Samsung executive Kim Hyun-joon said, quoted in The Korea Times.

To produce all this hardware, Samsung will have to expand its manufacturing base. The company expects to build just 40 million devices at its Korean factory; the lion's share will come from Samsung factories in Vietnam, China, and India. The company plans to spend $2.2 billion over the next several years to expand its Vietnamese factories.

Samsung is also planning to produce devices running Tizen, an operating system it developed together with Intel. Tizen is designed to run on smart phones, tablets, TVs, computers, and even GPS units to give users a consistent experience across devices. The first Tizen devices haven't been released yet, but Samsung's 2013 phones and tablets may be among the earliest.

Samsung has had a busy year, not least because of its public legal battles with rival Apple. The latter won a $1 billion injunction against Samsung earlier in 2012, but the judgement hasn't done much to dent Samsung's momentum -- especially since Apple has been largely unsuccessful in barring Samsung smart phones from being sold. Samsung's bullish predictions for 2013 suggest that the company isn't too worried about future legal roadblocks, either.

Apple Has A Lot of ?Tricks Up Its Sleeve? in 2013 ... - Yahoo! Finance

2012 has been a tumultuous year for both Apple (AAPL) and its investors. The stock, once a darling of Wall Street, has fallen precipitously from its intraday high of $705.07 on Sept. 21; shares are down nearly 23% in three months (the stock is up 26.7% YTD).

The maker of the iPhone and iPad has experienced both highs and lows this year.

Apple's 2012 highlights include:

  1. iPhone 5 Debut: Apple debuted its highly anticipated and widely speculated iPhone 5 to much fanfare. The tech giant sold a record-breaking 5 million iPhone 5 devices in its September opening weekend, with demand exceeding the company?s initial supply. According to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, Apple now holds 53.3% of the U.S. smartphone market ? the first time Apple has surpassed the 50% mark. Apple?s dominance with smartphone users in the U.S. can largely be attributed to sales of the iPhone 5.
  2. Major Patent Win: Apple also decisively won its patent infringement suit against Korean competitor Samsung this summer. The nine-member jury ruled that Samsung copied the look and feel of its iPhone and awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages.
  3. iPad Mini: This fall Apple unveiled the iPad mini, the smaller and less expensive alternative to its widely popular iPad tablets.

Apple's 2012 lowlights include:

  1. Maps Flap: Apple's Maps mobile app, designed to replace the popular Google Maps tool, was riddled with flaws and did not work correctly, forcing a rare public apology from CEO Tim Cook. Several senior executives including longtime iPhone and iPad software chief Scott Forstall, retail head John Browett and mapping app executive Richard Williamson were fired this year. Apple also missed its third-quarter and fourth-quarter profit forecasts, shocking analysts and investors and causing a sell-off in the stock. Prior to the third-quarter, Apple had beaten Wall Street estimates in 17 out of its last 18 quarters.
  2. Sweatshop in China: Foxconn, the Chinese manufacturer of the iPhone and iPad, continued to make news this year for its subpar and extreme working conditions. It was also blamed for delays of iPhone 5 shipments."The iPhone 5 is the most difficult device that Foxconn has ever assembled," according to a Foxconn official. "To make it light and thin, the design is very complicated. It takes time to learn how to make this new device. Practice makes perfect. Our productivity has been improving day by day."

Tech journalist and founder of the Techonomy Conference David Kirkpatrick says concerns over Apple?s future are overblown. He believes Tim Cook is a "brilliant" leader and the tech juggernaut has "a lot of tricks up its sleeve" in the coming year.

?I don?t think there?s any fundamental problem with Apple,? Kirkpatrick tells The Daily Ticker. ?In fact, Apple?s P/E is still ridiculously low. It?s still by the far the world?s most popular consumer electronics company. I would be a buyer of the stock.?

Kirkpatrick expects sales of the iPhone, iPad and iPad mini will continue to surprise to the upside next year but cautions that Apple?s margins for these products will fall as the consumer electronics market becomes tighter. The longtime Apple watcher also predicts 2013 will be the year of the Apple TV, which Kirkpatrick describes as a ?real, full-fledged screen TV? that?s built to connect to the Internet.

My gaming career started with consoles but my first computer, a Dell (when they were a good company), got me into PC gaming. Ever since I've built my own rigs by hand and thankfully have fixed more than I've broken.

As a hobby I love to cook and as of this post I just recently got done baking several hundred (if not more) cookies for friends and family this Christmas.

WHAT I DO IN-GAME:

Medics/healers are always my specialty. K/D ratio means nothing if I can heal and/or resurrect my peers in battle. In fact, support in general is what I do best and if I have a competent leader I will follow wherever I need to be at any given point.

Well??I think that's as best a summary about myself as anyone would be interested in. All I can say now is... I'm glad to be here!

Oxfam: 'Depressing' portrayals hurt Africa aid

Oxfam UK

Oxfam UK launched a new advertising campaign this week seeking to shift the focus to progress in Africa and away from 'depressing' images fostered by Live Aid and other well-intentioned efforts.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Twenty-seven years after Live Aid viscerally brought Africa's famine and poverty home to billions worldwide, the head of a major international charity?warned Wednesday that the "depressing" stereotypes left in its wake were counterproductive and risked driving help away.

The British arm of Oxfam International called images of starving babies and other familiar depictions of Africa over the last quarter-century "manipulative and hopeless," desensitizing potential donors and leading them to the conclusion that conditions in the developing world can never improve.?

Oxfam launched a new advertising campaign this week celebrating Africa's natural beauty and progress toward alleviating hunger. Called "Food for All," the campaign features images of lush green scenery, wildlife and thriving African food markets.

The campaign's tagline: "Let's Make Africa Famous for Its Epic Landscapes, Not Hunger."

Dame Barbara Stocking, the British charity's chief executive, said in a posting on Oxfam's website that "we've come a long way since the 1980s and Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas?'"

But "we need to shrug off the old stereotypes and celebrate the continent's diversity and complexity," she contended.

Band Aid, the musical charity supergroup formed in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, recorded "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in response to the crippling famine in Ethiopia. In 2004, on the song's 20th-anniversary re-release, the World Development Movement condemned it as "patronizing, false and out of date."

Geldof and Ure organized the landmark fundraising concert Live Aid in 1985, bringing dire conditions in Africa front and center to people around the world.

"'Patronizing' isn't the word" to describe the message fostered by Band Aid and other well-intentioned campaigns, Stocking said Wednesday in an interview on Sky News. "It's just this negativity. ...

"In order for people to understand what's happening in Africa, we've also got to tell the good stories, and there has been good news in Africa," said Stocking, who is retiring in the new year after serving with the charity since 2001.?

"Otherwise, people just feel put off and (believe) there's nothing that can be done about Africa," she said. "And that's the big worry for us ? that people feel it's all hopeless, when it clearly isn't."

World Bank statistics indicate that the world's heaviest concentration of malnutrition remains in Africa, afflicting as many as 15 percent of all children under 5 in some countries in the southern and eastern regions. And in June, the U.N. Children's Fund reported that 1.5 million children were at imminent risk of starvation in the western half of the continent.

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com

But while acknowledging that international aid has made few if any inroads on hunger, Oxfam said in a report this month that countries south of the Sahara Desert had made "one of the most remarkable turnarounds in development ... in the last decade." It called the 22 years from 1990 to 2011 an "African renaissance."

Oxfam: Africa is wide awake but still hungry (.pdf)

"Economies have been growing even in the face of economic and financial instability elsewhere in the world, poverty has fallen and child mortality has dropped considerably, among the most visible indicators of progress," the report said.

The real story, Stocking said Wednesday, is that "aid money is really working."

But in the end, she said, "we don't want to have to give aid money to Africa. We want economic development, enterprise ? that's what we're really aiming to do."

Welcome to the Mouse House: Organizing: Craft Supplies for Kids

I am back with some more organization tips and photos!

So far, I have shown how we organize toys?and how we organize our bookbag/school area. ?Now it is time to share how we store all those craft supplies the kids use!

If your kids are anything like mine, they love coloring and cutting and gluing?. generally anything messy and crafty! ?I love it too, but only if everything is within easy reach and kept organized.

We store all the kids' craft supplies in the lower cabinets of a hutch in the breakfast area.

Cabinet on the left houses paints, brushes, paper, a jar of scissors and glue sticks, and a large bin for "crafty fun" like glitter, pom poms, beads, rhinestones, and do-dads. ?

The middle cabinet holds stamps, ink pads, stickers, and even more "crafty goodness" like pipe cleaners, styrofoam balls, popsicle sticks, and molds for clay.

Finally, the cabinet to the right has lots of construction paper, crayons, colored pencils, markers, and chalk. ?This is also where we store all the activity books, coloring books, and workbooks.

To keep everything organized, I make sure to regularly purge and restock any items that need to be replaced ?(dried out markers, broken crayons, empty sticker packs, etc). ? The kids have also been taught where each item belongs, which definitely helps during clean up time!

And just because people have previously asked to see what I keep in the hutch up top?.

How do you organize your craft supplies? ?(Either your kids' or your own) ?I am always looking for new and interesting ideas!

Thousands sign U.S. petition to deport Piers Morgan over gun comments

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - More than 48,000 people have signed a petition that they posted on the White House website demanding that British CNN talk show host Piers Morgan be deported over comments he made on air about gun control.

Morgan last week lambasted pro-gun guests on his show, after the December 14 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where a gunman shot dead 26 people, including 20 children.

"We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens," the petition said.

The petition, started on December 21 by a man identified as Kurt N. from Austin, Texas, accuses Morgan of subverting the second amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees the right to bear arms.

U.S. citizens can file a petition on the White House website, whitehouse.gov, if they collect at least 25,000 signatures within 30 days. The White House is then obliged to issue a response.

Morgan, 47, a former newspaper editor in London, shot back at his critics on Twitter. He repeated his past calls for the United States to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and conduct background checks on all gun purchases.

Five days after the Connecticut massacre, Morgan called a guest, Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners for America, an "idiot," "dangerous" and an "unbelievably stupid man" when Pratt argued that more guns were needed to combat crime in the United States.

"I don't care about a petition to deport me. I do care about poor NY firefighters murdered/injured with an assault weapon today. #GunControlNow," Morgan tweeted on Monday, referring to a shooting in New York that killed three people, including the gunman.

Christa Robinson, a CNN spokeswoman, said the network had no immediate comment on the petition.

Publicist Howard Bragman, vice chairman of Reputation.com, said the controversy will get Morgan attention that may translate into higher ratings and wouldn't harm his reputation.

"A lot of it comes from his being British, he's seen the differences between the U.S. and UK, he's passionate and authentic in taking this issue on, and it's probably only going to help him attract more people to his show," Bragman, told Reuters.

Andruw Jones Arrested: Former Braves All-Star Free On Bond After Christmas Arrest, Battery Charge

Andruw Jones

This booking photo provided by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, shows former Atlanta Braves center fielder Andruw Jones. Jail records show that Jones is free on bond after being arrested in suburban Atlanta on a battery charge.

DULUTH, Ga. ? Former Atlanta Braves star center fielder Andruw Jones was free on bond after being arrested in suburban Atlanta early Tuesday on a battery charge, according to jail records.

Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call for a domestic dispute between Jones and his wife in Duluth.

Gwinnett County Detention Center records say Jones was booked into the jail around 3:45 a.m. and had been released on $2,400 bond by 11 a.m.

Once one of the premier players in the big leagues, Jones broke into the majors with the Atlanta Braves in 1996 and won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves from 1998-07 as their center fielder. He has 434 career home runs over the span of 17 seasons in the majors.

Jones earlier this month signed a $3.5 million, one-year contract with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan's Pacific League.

Neo Geo X hacked to run Unibios, unofficial game ROMS

Neo Geo X hacked to run Unibios, unofficial game ROMS

After witnessing the fall of the DS, DSi, 3DS and PlayStation Vita, it's no surprise to hear that the Neo Geo X has succumbed to the talents of the homebrew community, but it is a little shocking how easy the handheld was to conquer. Upon cracking the device open, enthusiasts were surprised to find no copy protection to speak of -- just a lightly glued MicroSD card. The folks on the Neo Geo forum wasted no time experimenting, and soon found that the handheld's Bios and game ROMs can be successfully swapped for new games or custom loaders. Substitute files need to retain the name of the file they replace, and swapped games remain mislabeled in the Neo Geo X menu, but the trick has already allowed some users to install the popular AES Unibios. The community hopes that the discovery will eventually allow them to tweak the handheld's TV-out resolution and enable manual switching between AES / MVS game modes. It's hardly a "hack," considering the SD card is completely unprotected, but it's a good start. Check out the source link below to peer at the device's insides, or just to watch the community in action.

Lawmakers play waiting game with "fiscal cliff" deadline in sight

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With only a week left before a deadline for the United States to go over a "fiscal cliff," lawmakers played a waiting game on Monday in the hope that someone will produce a plan to avoid harsh budget cuts and higher taxes for most Americans from New Year's Day.

Though Republicans and Democrats have spent the better part of a year describing a plunge off the cliff as a looming catastrophe, the nation's capital showed no outward signs of worry, let alone impending calamity.

The White House has set up shop in Hawaii, where President Barack Obama is vacationing.

The Capitol was deserted and the Treasury Department - which would have to do a lot of last-minute number-crunching with or without a deal - was closed.

So were all other federal government offices, with Obama having followed a tradition of declaring the Monday before a Tuesday Christmas a holiday for government employees, notwithstanding the approaching fiscal cliff.

Expectations for some 11th-hour rescue focused largely on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, in part because he has performed the role of legislative wizard in previous stalemates.

But McConnell, who is up for re-election in 2014, was shunning the role this year, his spokesman saying that it was now up to the Democrats in the Senate to make the next move.

"We don't yet know what Senator Reid will bring to the floor. He is not negotiating with us and the president is out of town," said McConnell's spokesman, referring to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat. "So I just don't know what they're going to do over there," he said.

Two-day-old tweets on leadership websites told the story insofar as it was visible to the public.

House Speaker John Boehner's referred everyone to McConnell. McConnell's tweet passed the responsibility along to Obama, saying it was a "moment that calls for presidential leadership."

Reid's tweet said: "There will be very serious consequences for millions of families if Congress fails to act" on the cliff.

The next session of the Senate is set for Thursday, but the issues presented by across-the-board tax hikes and indiscriminate reductions in government spending, were not on the calendar.

The House has nothing on its schedule for the week, but members have been told they could be called back at 48 hours notice, making a Thursday return a theoretical possibility.

However, aides to the Republican leaders in Congress said there were no talks with Democrats on Monday and none scheduled after negotiations fell off track last week when Boehner failed to persuade House Republicans to accept tax increases on incomes of more than $1 million a year.

"Nothing new, Merry Christmas," an aide to Boehner responded when asked if there was any movement on the fiscal cliff.

SCALED-BACK EXPECTATIONS

If there is some last-minute legislation, Republicans and Democrats agreed on Sunday news shows that it will not be any sort of "grand bargain" encompassing taxes and spending cuts, but most likely a short-term deal putting everything off for a few weeks or months, thereby risking a negative market reaction.

A limited agreement would still need bipartisan support, as Obama has said he would veto a bill that does not raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans.

On Monday, Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison urged fellow Republicans to be flexible.

"We're now at a point where we're not going to get what we think is right for our economy and our country because we don't control government. So we've got to work within the system we have," she told MSNBC.

Two bills in Congress could conceivably form the basis for a last-minute stopgap measure.

Last spring, Republicans in the House passed a measure that would extend Bush-era tax cuts for everyone, reflecting the party's deep reluctance to increase taxes.

The Democratic-controlled Senate passed a bill in August, extending lower tax rates for everyone except the wealthiest Americans - a group defined at that point as households with a net income of $250,000 or above. Obama has since increased that to $400,000 a year, in an effort to win Republican support.

Analysts say Democrats might be able to get the backing of enough Republicans in both the House and Senate, especially if they are willing to raise the number to $500,000.

Under that scenario, lawmakers might also put off spending cuts of $109 billion that would take effect from January and agree to Republican demands for cuts in entitlement programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, the government-run health insurance plans for seniors and the poor.

However, with only a few work days left in Congress after Christmas, there is a good chance that no deal can be worked out and tax rates would then go up, at least briefly, until an agreement is reached in Washington.

"We may go off the cliff on January 1, but we would correct that very quickly thereafter," Democratic Representative John Yarmuth told MSNBC.

The prospects of the United States going over the fiscal cliff dampened enthusiasm on Wall Street for a "Santa rally" in the holiday season, when stocks traditionally rise.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 51.76 points, or 0.39 percent, in Monday's shortened holiday session.

Failure to work out tax rates in the coming days would cause chaos at the Internal Revenue Service, said analyst Chris Krueger of Guggenheim Securities.

"Next weekend is going to be a total, total debacle," he said. The IRS is unlikely to have enough time to revise its tables for withholding taxes.

"The withholding tables are sort of like an aircraft carrier, you can't turn the thing on a dime." he said.

Memory Box Christmas Tags - Society of Stampaholics

I like to make my own Christmas tags, and we save them from year to year, so it's reaching the point where we have some real variety when we pick and choose which tag we want for the gift we're wrapping. But you can never have too many tags, in my opinion!

When I first saw Memory Box's Eyelet Stocking die (98416), my brain immediately screamed, "Gift Tag! Gift Tag!"

It was really easy to make these tags while watching holiday classics like Miracle on 34th Street and Home Alone. If you've got this die and are planning on watching some films, go ahead and turn it into a family craft project - we had a blast!

I didn't even stamp on these (with the exception of the first tag); The focus her is on patterned paper, accents, and ribbon. I apologize for the poorly lit photos ?- just haven't been able to get any decent light lately.

Blue-Snowflakes

All supplies are from Memory Box unless otherwise noted: Water, Grey cardstock; Martha Stewart ribbon; Memento ink; snowflake stamp ?

All supplies are from Memory Box unless otherwise noted: white cardstock; Yuletide patterned paper; Martha Stewart, Offray ribbon; Paper Studio rosette sticker; red pearls

B A S I C ? I N S T R U C T I O N S

  1. Cut stocking from patterned paper (1) and matching cardstock (2). (Blue and gray tag requires 2 water cardstock stockings and 1 grey cardstock stocking.)?
  2. Horizontally score one of the cardstock stockings about .5" from the top of the stocking and bend it back on the fold. Write your TO and FROM info on the front, then?adhere the cardstocking stocking beneath the patterned paper stocking. (Keep your adhesive above the score line.)?
  3. Use a 1 3/8" circle punch to cut the toe and heel from the second cardstock stocking.
  4. (For blue and grey stocking, stamp snowflakes on stocking.)
  5. Adhere toe and heel "patches" to the patterned paper stocking.
  6. Cut eyelet stocking topper from cardstock.
  7. (Where applicable, wrap ribbon around stocking topper and adhere to stocking.)?
  8. Adhere accents, brads, etc to stocking and topper.
  9. (For dark snowflake stocking, dot liquid pearls in center of each snowflake.)

T I P

Once you cut the heel and tip from the stocking, line it up on your work surface with the stockign from which it was cut. This helps you to know which way to glue the bits on to the patterned paper.

Thanks for stopping and have a blessed day!

Want To Work On Your Self Improvement But Don't Know Where To ...

Challenge yourself to become a better person by looking for personal development opportunities. There are plenty of tips that you can use to help you towards your own self improvement, so take some time to read this article and apply the knowledge accordingly.

Many people starting on a personal development journey struggle because their goal is too vague and unspecific. Set a clear, well-defined goal for yourself. Specific goals will get specific results.

TIP! Be ready to take down any ideas you may have, no matter what the setting is. Paper is an old fashioned way to record notes, but it never runs out of battery power.

A decision avoided is an opportunity missed when it comes to personal development. You shouldn?t fear making a decision, even if you don?t have all the facts ahead of time. Good instincts are the result of successful decisions. Even if a mistake is realized after a choice is made, it can still be viewed as valuable because it could be treated as a learning experience. Making an incorrect decision will help increase the chances that you will choose correctly the next time you are faced with a similar choice.

Avoid going shopping as a form of entertainment or comfort. If you focus your time on something productive rather than shopping, you?ll save money, and your house won?t look like a big mess.

TIP! One key to improving your lifestyle through personal development is to set goals that are reasonable. Identify your weaknesses and strive to overcome them so you can become a stronger, better person.

Don?t worry so much. Worrying is really imagining things that are not there, and why worry about something that hasn?t happened? Confront your fears and take action that will prevent them from occurring in the first place. Instead, you might feel prepared and more at ease in your mind and day-to-day life.

Staying positive takes a lot of willpower and it might mean that if you are positive towards others, then good things will come to you. The idea here is that you should act toward others with a positive attitude. If you endeavor to be positive about all things, then that positivity will come back to you.

TIP! When you are working toward personal development, an important thing to keep in mind is that you are entitled to the best. You must realize that doing your best is what you deserve.

An excellent method of helping you with your anxiety is going to the movies with a friend. This helps put you into a social situation, but it doesn?t involve socializing until you are uncomfortable. It will help you get used to the social scene.

Specific Goals

TIP! You should be humble in your everyday interactions. Learn from your daily experiences, and recognize what you are not able to change about the circumstances that are present in your life.

Establish a very detailed plan to improve your life. If you have a list of specific goals you want to accomplish, you will have an easier time traveling along the path to success. Specific goals give you a way to measure your progress.

Take the time to change the focus of your conversation from your own accomplishments and awards to the achievements of those around you. This allows you to discover some of the great things that people around you are capable of accomplishing, which helps you to respect others by giving you insight into their character.

TIP! Accomplish the things in life you want to accomplish. You will never create the life you desire by simply fantasizing about it.

As mentioned in the beginning, self improvement includes broadening your world of knowledge. However, learning new knowledge is pointless if you never apply it to any real life situations. The avenues open to you for self-improvement are many. These tips should allow you to feel more confident.

The Internet has a wealth of information concerning personal development. Luckily you have found some of the most relevant information here in this article. You may have a lot to learn regarding personal development, but you should have the basics down now.

NFL-bound Aboushi helps storm victims on SI

NEW YORK (AP) ? Oday Aboushi watched all the news reports, sitting miles away from home at the University of Virginia and feeling helpless as Superstorm Sandy tore through the neighborhoods he grew up in.

The big offensive lineman, a potential first-round pick in the NFL draft in April, returned to Staten Island to lend a hand Saturday to those affected by the storm. Aboushi says driving through the hard-hit neighborhoods of Tottenville and Midland Beach was "an eye-opening experience," even nearly two months after families were left without homes.

Aboushi, joined by his family, is handing out food, supplies and clothing ? with an assist from a big donation by Jets linebacker David Harris ? to nearly 1,000 Staten Island residents.

Professor's algorithm writes technical reports, romance novels could ...

Philip M. Parker, a marketing professor at INSEAD (the European Institute of Business Administration), has written and patented a system that uses an algorithm to automatically compile data into book form. Between his works and those of his research group (ICON Group International), he has over 900,000 books currently for sale on Amazon. More than a smart search engine, his system only requires a few minutes or a few hours to scan the databases relevant to any given topic and organize that data into a technical report. Next stop? Romance novels.

There are few things in life quite as boring as writing a technical report. You accumulate all available data on the topic, then categorize and prioritize the information. A general structure within with which to present the data is then chosen from a few common structures, whereupon the collected and sorted information is presented as a report. Such reports are formulaic ? produced in accordance with a slavishly followed rule or style, and their generation is largely a process of intellectual drudgery requiring very little creativity. It's exactly the sort of task for which computers were developed.

Prof. Parker, an author of several conventionally written technical and business reports, realized one day that the process of writing such a report can be described in terms of a reasonably well defined algorithm. He then set out to program a computer to carry out this algorithm, for which he was issued US Patent 7,266,767 (Method and apparatus for automated authoring and marketing.).

Parker designed the algorithm to follow (hopefully closely) the path that an expert would take in writing a summary about a data-rich subject. There are similarities to IBM's Jeopardy grandmaster Watson, which also casts a wide data net, then organizes and summarizes the data so it can respond rapidly to questions.

Some examples of books written by Parker's program include:
  • Satirists: Webster's Quotations, Facts and Phrases
  • The 2007 Report on Little Cigarette-Size Cigars Weighing Less Than 3 Pounds Per 1,000 Cigars: World Market Segmentation by City
  • Webster's English to Portuguese Brazilian Crossword Puzzles: Level 10 (Portuguese Edition)
  • Webster's Hiligaynon - English Thesaurus Dictionary
  • The Official Patient's Sourcebook on Blepharitis

While some of these titles seem difficult to believe, there is a (generally small) market for each of them. If a person or company needs in-depth data about a subject, however narrow, that data has value in organized form. Parker's program works especially well with modern distribution technologies, turning print-on-demand into written-on-demand.

Parker has also used an outgrowth of his algorithm to write a comprehensive set of poems about roughly 80,000 words in the English language. Totopoetry is a collection of algorithmically authored poetry that neatly illustrates the strengths and limitations of algorithmic writing. Poems are written in 17 styles (e.g., Haiku, limerick, sonnet) for each word in English.

Each poem is intended to illuminate the meaning of the word on which it is based. For example, the octosyllable poem for "poetry" reads:

????????&nbsp"Really instant and overt.
????????&nbspBut also distant and covert."
? Totopoetry

And then there is the modern Haiku form, again on "poetry":

????????&nbsp"An executive,
????????&nbspevokes many directions,
????????&nbspnumbers and manners"
? Totopoetry

At present Parker's algorithm cannot judge its work against some intrinsic or personal measure of poetic merit.

The next area of formulaic writing to which Parker wants to adapt his algorithm is romance novels, which are widely (perhaps unfairly) denigrated as "cookie-cutter" literature. Parker believes their simplicity and limited plot structure suggest romances as the best target for an early attack on fiction writing. Regardless of his level of success, human authors are likely to face progressively more competition from algorithmic authors over the next decade or so. At this point it seems likely that the place of the best human writers is probably safe, but for how long? Time will tell.
